Earlier this year our resident WW1 uniformologists sorted out some questions I had regarding early war infantry uniforms and now I have a questions relating to their junior officers. In Andre' Jouineau's "French Army 1914" one plate suggests that, on mobilization, infantry officers wore a bluish iron grey smock. According to Osprey's "The French Army 1914-18", however, junior officers wore at the Great War's outset a vareuse or short jacket that was black in color. So which is correct or are they both correct (i.e. did officers have some latitude in the color jackets they could choose from)? |

I thought it was a dark blue jacket. Maybe the blue was so dark it could be confused with black? |

I have done some the grey blue and have some the dark prussian with red culotts. I am in the process of doing some alpine troops blue jackets and very light grey pants. Barnes and noble has a great book caleed uniforms of ww1 only about 30 dollars has most countries. |
