We played out the basic 'attack' scenario tonight from the rulebook. Interesting battle with the Russians having a few poor rolls but the Germans once more performing well…

The game started with a scheduled artillery strike from the Germans landing right on a Russian infantry platoon and with 8 dice scoring four direct hits… That pretty much gutted a platoon in the first turn and killed their Platoon Commander. Things didnt get much better from there on in for the Russians. Their attempt to push the left flank of the Germans ran onto mortar fire and two Panzer IVs set-up in ambush that destroyed four T-34s with a bit of help from the lone Tiger Ace.

On the other flank the massed tank attack by 6 T-34s and a single SU-152 was broken up by another Panzer IV and an artillery rquest that brought in a Nebelwerfer strike. This caused the Russian attack to divert, after knocking out the Panzer IV and they tried to attack in the centre. This met with more heavy mortar fire and tank fire, and although they managed to immobilise the Tiger, the Russians lost all their armour… With 11 tanks burning on the battlefield and one of their two infantry platoons gutted, the Russians retreated. The Germans lost a Panzer IV and two MG teams plus a few more casualties from one of the infantry commands.

What clinched it for the Germans was that their force was more compact and featured a balance of all arms with some choice supporting artillery. The Russians, electing to go tank heavy, had little artillery support to help them and with the tanks moving far ahead of the infantry, and the infantry commanders being casualties early on, they had to make an armour only attack that battered its way through but to no avail.

Oh and the Germans had some very nice dice rolls…

Great photos and an entertaining report. Is "Battlegroup Kursk" the name of the ruleset used?

If so, do you think they might work for 54mm WWII skirmish?

Very nice report.

Who is the publisher, or is that top secret as well.

I am disappointed that I never picked up a copy of KGN. For some reason I read an early review that KGN was going to be a clone of LotW/LoTR and so didn't really catch my interest (I do like LoTR but was skeptical). Because of this I never read any further reviews/bat reps until a couple weeks ago. Boy was I surprised, and a little disappointed in the lack of rule availability.

You can add me to the list of people waiting in anticipation.

Chris

On my way to pre-order. Thanks Piers.

Nice table and nice models.

Still, what interests me in a new set of rules are:
-scope of game (regiment/batalion, company, platoon, squad?)
-steps in a turn
-command & control mecanisms
-FOG
-combat resolution

Could we have some insights on what direction it goes for each point

ItinerantHobbyist21 Jun 2012 10:01 p.m. PST

I second helmet101's request

PiersBrand21 Jun 2012 11:48 p.m. PST

Yup…

I hope to have a more detailed AAR this week that will shed some light.

helmet10122 Jun 2012 2:10 a.m. PST

thanks for the answer, Piers, we're looking forward to it.

That looks so very nice. Ah, so many questions and so few answers for them. Must…be…patient.

Martin Rapier27 Jun 2012 3:55 a.m. PST

"-scope of game (regiment/batalion, company, platoon, squad?)"

Given the author and the info in the AAR (talking about platoons) it looks pretty much like a Russian Front version of KGN.

1:1 vehicles & men, Platoon/company sized actions.

PiersBrand27 Jun 2012 4:25 a.m. PST

Yup… Just with different rules.

It is not the same rules as KGN… Similar in some mechanics, but not the same.

PiersBrand27 Jun 2012 4:28 a.m. PST

Bit more info is last weekends AAR;

Based on this photo:

Looks like it's player-as-company commander, more or less. Hrm… not entirely sold on that scale (I do like my Flames of War), but the fact that my local game store will (likely) have a copy I can look at will be nice.
