I have a couple of Wars of the Roses armies, and a friend and I have together hacked up HC lists for Lancastrian, Yorkist and Tudor Forces for the period. However a mate has Scots for the same period, and has asked for a list. Paul and I said 'sure' but then realised we know -all about Mediaeval Scots. I could do some original research – or I could just say sod it and buy someone elses and convert it. Does anyone know of a reputable set of lists for Mediaeval Scots for the 15th and 16th centuries I can shamelessly pillage? pat |

I'm using Warhammer Historical's Armies of Antiquity, Medieval Scotland, p. 190-1 |

Yes, that's it Pat, 2nd ed. The only issue is that the medieval French list was left out by the publishers, but can be picked up online. Regards, |

Alas – I must correct myself MCF/SM. 1150 to 1350! Oops! Sorry to raise your hopes. |

I think 1644 had lists too if I remember |

Those lists in 1644 would be for a somewhat later time than that desired by the OP – and also a bit on the simplistic side for my tastes. DBR also features an army list for the 16th century Scots. |

Not familiar with warhammer or FOG etc., but I have a pretty extensive knowledge of medieval Scottish armies. Broadly speaking, if serving in Scotland a large army should probably have about 15% men-at-arms, 10% Longbows and 75% heavy infantry with long spears (12 foot-ish). If serving in France you should be thinking in terms of 50% heavy infantry, 30% archers and 20% men-at-arms. The highly mobile forces of the 1310s onward should be considered mounted infantry, not light or medium cavalry. Most campaigning betweeen the Scot snd the English was, however, conducted by small forces consisting almost entirely of men-at-arms
by 1330 the disticntion between men-at-arms and hobelars had pretty much disappeared and before that hobelars fought on foot if a major battle developed. Figures
wargame manufacturers tend to be a generation behind the times on armour (as do most non-military medieval historians) so if you want armies for the 1290s to 1320s look at figures for the early part of the HYW (foundry are not bad at all); barded horses, quite a bit of plate, bacinet helmets. Scottish men-at-arms, spearment and archers looked exactly like English or french ones so no problem there. Late medieval armies should not be differnet in proportion
the highland dagger men belioved of novelists are unknown to history. WoR Scots should look like WoR English except for a preference for spears over bills. medieval aargame horses tend to be a bit too big; the mearest thing today would be 'hunter', so avoid cart-horse type models if you can. |
