…being pics of my latest Auxiliary cohort, and an associated cohort. I have hopefully given these a slight gallic flavour, a hint of garlic!

Lots about them on the blog:-

Great figures, great flavor Simon! I especially the love the cloaks and the Gallic standards.

Nicely done Simon – I do like the fact you are basing 4 to a base. Close order foot are better this way – given that my opponents are WAB or similar players I have switched to 20mm bases. With the larger figures these days it works out well.

Maybe leave some garlic on the bases for effect?

Nice work. The idea for the cloaks was terrific.

The garlic flavour is a great idea – a good way to show where the troops were raised. Some local variation works really well for the auxiliae…

Thanks chaps, I'm a lot happier with the first lot now there are more minis with different poses mixed in. I also did some battle damage on the shields which is too subtle for the photos, but which looks good "in the flesh".

Simon; it's good to see some more of your boys!

Simon- love the cloaks. Are these sculpted on BTD Auxiliaries? If so would be tempted by them as they look good and your painting has really done them justice.

Agree with basing- you have converted me to try something similar.

Cheers

James

PS: just out of interest – are your doing commands for Auxiliary Archers? I could nt remember seeing any archers on your blog.

Hi James,

Yes the cloaks are cast on, but they do similar figures without. I did see a cloaked BTD army once, on snowy bases for fighting in winter, they looked really good. There's a great opportunity for a winter raid scenario for someone. Maybe we could tempt Aventine to do cloaks? I was watching Fall of the Roman Empire earlier, with snow falling as the legionaries fought Germans right in the middle of Aventine's new period.

Re archer commands, I did a stand that worked out really well:-

I gave the Foundry Signifer a greenstuff skirt. There's also a link to my archer unit.

Hi Oldbob, and Mike (in anticipation)!

Simon

My struggle to not buy more Aventine Miniatures is hard enough without you giving Adam any more good ideas!

It's been a while since I have seen that film but was talking about it with friends a couple of weeks back. I must rewatch it next time it is on TV.

I was initially set on doing EIR for Trajan's Dacian Wars. Made the mistake of clicking on a wiki link on Marcomannic wars and realised that only 80 years apart and close geogrpahically….

That got me giving the Aventine EIR a proper look for first time. I can't afford any now and I need to knuckle down and paint my Warlord Games and Foundry-Perry EIR. But I think another Vexiliation of Avetine EIR beckons in the future. Especially when Adam finished off their range.

Palmyran Archer Command looks great- have you got a shot of them with the rest of the unit?

So far I have got 2 packs of WG Western Auxiliary Archers, bought when they first released them. If I am modelling my Legionary and Auxiliary HC units as 24 man Cohorts, then I think I will probably need to do the same for Auxiliary Archers.

That means I need another 8 Auxiliary Archers (including Command) to complete the Cohort- either more WG figures or another range that is compatible size and looks wise. Any suggestions?

(For now I am holding off on getting any Eastern Auxiliary Archers because then i will be compelled to get some Dromedary riders for support).

Cheers

James

Hi James, only this one pic of the archers before their centurion was transferred to I Adriutrix, and replaced by the more exotic A&A figure. I'll do a replacement pic of the unit mid next month when I conclude the current phase of my auxiliary project.

Later I'll do a unit or two of the Western archers, m'self.

For comparable with WG worth looking at Imago Militis, nice minis, modestly sized*.
