ACW – should be lots of material out there
the sound track to Ken Burn's documentary The Civil War is great, and that Sullivan Ballou Letter
unforgettable. Many other tapes and CD's by re-enactor groups. Soundtracks to Glory, Gettysburg, and others AWI – Fifes and drums of Colonial Williamsburg comes readily to mind. The music to musical "1776" too, for that matter! |

The Barry Lyndon film soundtrack, nothing beats the British Grenadiers march for getting you in the mood to kill rebels, er I mean our good friends across the pond ! |

If you want to think about actual music that people alive during the AWI may have listened to, I posted a short list on my blog a few years ago: link |

Inspiration will come from watching a movie, If I'm painting Zulus, I will watch Zulu Dawn or Zulu, Plains Indians, I will watch Son of the morning star. When I paint, I listen to the bands and musicians I always do, Clapton, Diana Krall, Chicago
..anything really, I have very eclectic tastes when it comes to music, it runs from AC-DC to Prince, to Kiss, to Garth Brooks and so on
.James Taylor is great to paint by. |

AWI: Barry Philips & Friends (The World Turned Upside Down album); Colonial Williamsburg fife and drum corps music. Also check to see if Fort Necessity store does online sales. I picked up 5-6 different CDs of AWI era music. ACW: soundtrack I & II from "Gettysburg", soundtrack from Ken Burns' ACW film on PBS; 97th Regimental String Band (they have about 6 albums – great music!) |

For WW2: Get the audio book for "The Keep" or "The Second Objective". Look online for D-Day OTR broadcasts. That is what I do. |

For WW2: Very Lynn (of course), Al Bowlly, Rina Ketty (J'attendrai), Noel Coward and George Formby. But then I am British. |

For WW2: Very Lynn (of course), Al Bowlly, Rina Ketty (J'attendrai), Noel Coward and George Formby. But then I am British. For the Americans – the Andrews sisters, Tommy Dorsey, most swing era bands. Glenn Miller especially, since he was killed (accidently) during the war. |

I got soundtracks and some period music. Looking for military music. I got a ton of British stuff. There is not a lot of American stuff. WW2 German is not only hard to find but I feel kinds creepy buying it. I plan on making lists up for each era. |

German Marching music is the best to paint to, there is tons of it on ebay and you can have it sent in a brown paper wrapping-like porn. |
Some Chicken | 13 Jun 2012 2:21 p.m. PST |
CP – if you want a British flavour you might like to check out "Come on Lads" by Sods' Opera. WW2 era canteen songs with authentic lyrics ("Bless 'em all" is a bit different in the real version)played and sung by some competent musicians. Well worth a listen and very evocative of the era. |

Got to agree the Barry Lyndon film soundtrack is all 'round best. Anyone know where you can get it on CD? |
Bellbottom | 13 Jun 2012 4:28 p.m. PST |
For Germans try The Luftwaffe March from the film 'Battle of Britain', for Soviets try anything by the Red Army Choir {particularly one called 'forward', starts off faintly in the distance, gets louder as they pass and then fades again as the go forward, very evocative of a column of marching Cossacks), for ancients try Respigi 'The Pines of the Appian Way' (similar to the above mentioned Red Army effort). |

Got to agree the Barry Lyndon film soundtrack is all 'round best. Anyone know where you can get it on CD?--------------------------It's still commercially available, as far as I know. Try Ebay or Gemm otherwise. You should be able to order it from the UK if you have no luck ! |

I've been looking for a loop of military snare drums, like the background music to a 1960s era WWII movie, to play for all games. |
