Subject says it all. If I were to get rid of my current collection and upgrade what should I get?

FireZouave10 Jun 2012 9:31 p.m. PST

My favorite line right now would have to be "Blue Moon". The quality and variety of the figures puts it above everything else. And you can't beat the price either! There are arguments for other miniature lines, but in the end, these are the best! Of course everyone has their personel preference!

jowady10 Jun 2012 11:08 p.m. PST

Is Blue Moon's ACW line actually 15mm or is it closer to 18mm?

War In 15MM10 Jun 2012 11:21 p.m. PST

Blue Moon seems to be the flavor of the moment in 15mm/18mm figures. They offer a wide selection of figures. I have a large collection of their FIW, and I'm very happy with them. Having said that, my ACW 15mm collection is more than 20 years old; it is largely made up of Old Glory 15s supplemented with some Battle Honours, Essex, Minifig and Peter Pig. I still love those figures and I'm still extremely happy with what I have. You can see my 15mm ACW collection in diorama form at link

Fat Wally10 Jun 2012 11:41 p.m. PST

I am a huge fan of Peter Pig, though they are true 15mm.

GeoffQRF11 Jun 2012 1:25 a.m. PST

The Freikorp range are 15mm: link

6sided11 Jun 2012 2:05 a.m. PST

Blue moon are too big to fit with other manufacturers, so workin on the basis that they ain't 15mm, I would have to say Essex and Peter Pig as they are both compatible and comprehensive ranges.

Freikorp 15mm is my favourite loads of variety as 'complete' ranges go it must be a contender for the top prize.

I have to admit to liking Stone Mountain

That being said, I must buy some Blue Moon

FireZouave11 Jun 2012 4:57 a.m. PST

Yes, Blue Moon are closer to 18mm. And I like Battle Honors or Anthony Barton, but they don't have the variety that Blue Moon has. The other manufacturers are nice too, and despite the size difference, I use them together as separate units. Can't tell from a distance. We are talking about wargames, and not dioramas where the difference does matter.

nazrat11 Jun 2012 6:22 a.m. PST

I'll vote Blue Moon regardless of how many actual millimeters they are.

CorpCommander11 Jun 2012 6:49 a.m. PST

@War in 15mm That diorama looks amazing!

I was looking at the Blue Moon figures. They do seem to have a very complete line. My figures are 20+ years old. I started collecting in 1989 and had it all painted by 1998. So this is the set I am taking on the road to conventions to run the ACW rules I'm writing. However for my own use and for photos of games to put into the rules I will want something attractive and not showing 20 years of wear!

All the other lines are good too. I will have to get packs when I am at Historicon and compare them side by side. Another issue will be how they fit on the bases I use.

jowady11 Jun 2012 7:44 a.m. PST

My concern with the size of Blue Moon was because I have some old Minifigs as well as Stone Mountain and I was looking for something compatible.

Ed Mohrmann11 Jun 2012 8:32 a.m. PST

I've Stone Mountain, Frontier and other 15mm's in my
ACW armies, and Blue Moon.

The latter work well in their own units, and with a
thinner base so the height difference isn't so apparent.

Blue Moon are very nice figures.

torokc11 Jun 2012 1:14 p.m. PST

Old Glory, may have to add Blue Moon into my collection.

War In 15MM11 Jun 2012 1:46 p.m. PST

CorpCommander, thank you. Richard

FireZouave11 Jun 2012 7:02 p.m. PST

Just finished these Blue Moon figures today. 1st Virginia with Havelocks for 1st Bull Run. Yes, you see some figures that look like Yanks in there. One company wore the blue in my research. The figure out front is an original Old Glory Confederate officer figure with a havelock added to him.

Oh Bugger12 Jun 2012 1:40 a.m. PST

They do look nice FireZouave.

Fred Ehlers12 Jun 2012 5:45 a.m. PST

Musket Minis would be my choice.

Notice how the original OG figure looks just fine in size comparison in front of the BM in the picture above.

Russ, you're right, and that particular Old Glory figure is actually the same height as the Blue Moon Figures. I stood the figure right next to them and they are exactly the same height. The figure is on a washer and the stand is the same thickness as the washer.

Old Contemptibles12 Jun 2012 10:33 a.m. PST

Freikorps 15 range is my favorite. They can be brittle but I have hundreds and hundreds of them and they look great. For variety of poses and particular units you can't beat them.

firstvarty197912 Jun 2012 11:42 a.m. PST

I was thinking that about the Blue Moon as they compared to some of the older Old Glory Figures (of which I have hundreds, mostly unpainted, of course… :-( )

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP12 Jun 2012 11:57 a.m. PST

No one will provide more pose options then the Blue Moon ACW and the range will be the most complete.

I've bought about half the Blue Moon ACW range and have to say I love the figures and can't wait until the range is completed. I was hoping that Old Glory might be able to provide a time frame for when that may be.

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP12 Jun 2012 2:58 p.m. PST

The current list should be done in the next Six to ten months -- then we will begin adding other more obscure things at regular entervals.

JeremyR12 Jun 2012 3:52 p.m. PST

Thanks for the info Russ. I just found a pdf catalogue with the whole range listed and I can't wait until the rest of this range becomes available. Is there any way to get your scuptors to work faster? Perhaps more frequent floggings to increase morale?

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP12 Jun 2012 5:02 p.m. PST

To be honest -- I stuck some ranges in the last 12 months that were not really planned --this slowed the ACW and Napoloinics down quite a bit -- it will not happen again.

FireZouave12 Jun 2012 7:54 p.m. PST

I'm still waiting for the rather obscure 1st Fire Zouaves, Garibaldi Guard and 14th Brooklyn. I love the Blue Moon figures. Best figures since the original Old Glory!

Maxshadow12 Jun 2012 9:43 p.m. PST

AB's are nice figures too. link

FireZouave13 Jun 2012 4:51 a.m. PST

Yes, AB's are very nice, and I have some. They just don't have the variety that Blue Moon has. But they fit in very nicely with Blue Moon figures.

Maxshadow13 Jun 2012 5:17 a.m. PST

Yes they don't have the variety. I was pretty happy earlier in this thread when some one mentioned that Blue Moon were 18mm as well.

Don196213 Jun 2012 5:14 p.m. PST

I am a huge fan of AB (Anthony Barton/Eureka) 15mm Napoleonics. I have found, however, that his ACW figures are noticeably smaller in stature than equivalent Blue Moons. This is especially true of the horses. I won't mix them into the same units, but they do look fine organized into separate units on the table. Same goes for Old Glory 15's.

Early morning writer13 Jun 2012 9:24 p.m. PST

I'm a big Blue Moon fan and I might go with their ACW if starting today – but I actually like more regular units. I'd go with Stone Mountain and Musket Miniatures because they are easy to paint (wave a brush vaguely in their direction). I also like Freikorps (QRF) since they offer figures no one else has ever done in this scale (that I know of, anyway) like the contraband figures – nice for verisimilitude. And while I like Essex – I wouldn't call their range huge, way too many gaps in it – but they do have the only bands I know of. Basic idea is there is enough choice to give you intellectual indigestion.

Of course, if you like skirmish gaming the there is only one real choice: Blue Moon – all those unique figures.
