Just saw this on my twitter feed, the website is live now. Some really cool looking stuff. hawkwargames.com |

I really want some of those PHR walkers for my 15's. Perhaps I can use them as drones if they won't be suitable as one man walkers. |
Covert Walrus | 08 Jun 2012 7:43 p.m. PST |
And now we see the costs – Perhaps just as impressive as the minis, as that frankly is *way* less than I expected! Splendid composition for the pack deals too. |
Tom Reed | 08 Jun 2012 7:45 p.m. PST |
Wow! This all looks very impressive. I'm interesting in knowing how the rules work. |
SBminisguy | 08 Jun 2012 8:29 p.m. PST |
Looking forward to previews of the rules! |
KJdidit | 08 Jun 2012 8:29 p.m. PST |
I actually had a moment of sticker shock when I saw the prices – a bit more than expected, though the larger packages seem to make the model costs more reasonable to me. I would also like to know something about the game other than the fact that the models are excellent. |
chironex | 08 Jun 2012 9:35 p.m. PST |
"In the meantime, 10mm scale is very close to model railway N-scale (1:188 vs 1:200). As such, buildings made for this scale work very well for games of Dropzone Commander. " The smallest standard for N being 1:160, I can't make heads or tails of this passage. At any rate, it may be closest, but there is little of value in N, as all the stuff I have found so far, from European manufacturers, was built before the second world war. there are only a few incongruous and expensive modern buildings. Japanese N may seem to offer a solution, but remember that they are 10 scales larger, so not good unless you really like buildings way big (not that there's that many people here who don't) and British N larger still, plus of course the age-of-prototype view. I still don't know what to do; I mean, 63 quid for the most basic army set, plus 15 more for the rules
And smeg knows how much for shipping. That kind of rules out preordering that many due to not being able to decide. Although if the quality of casting and resin used matches the images that shouldn't really be an unexpected price range, given what I get as a railway modeller for that cost. As to the rules, what I have been able to work out is that you have command units you don't always need, so shouldn't have to buy the commander cards; and, well, that's about it. Explains why the cheapest starters don't seem to have command units
Still possible, if I can work out what I want

£12.00 GBP for 30 10mm figures! They're taking the proverbial. I can get 30 from Pendraken for £4.80 GBP. Ok maybe the sculpts arn't quite as good but at 10mm who can make out the detail when they're on the table. Heck I can even buy good 15mm figures from Rebel minis or Critical Mass games and still save money. |
Manflesh | 09 Jun 2012 1:37 a.m. PST |
Hmmm
I love Pendraken but I'd never suggest that someone compares their products with anyone else in terms of quality, because they'll come off badly. The argument could be extended to saying "I don't need figures because cutting counters out of cereal packets is free". The Hawk wargames site states that more info will be upcoming on the rules prior to the pre-order shipping date, so I don't think they are trying to get you to drop money before you know anything about the mechanics. I think they've just loaded up everything they could so far. Leigh |
Derek H | 09 Jun 2012 1:45 a.m. PST |
Very nice indeed. But they are way overpriced. |
chironex | 09 Jun 2012 3:05 a.m. PST |
Dare I ask how you know they're "over" priced? Do any of us know how much it costs to produce them? |
Lovejoy | 09 Jun 2012 3:10 a.m. PST |
The prices are pretty much inline with 15mm stuff – 40 to 45p for an infantry figure, and the vehicles are similarly priced. That said, they look great, and I reckon 15mm stuff is underpriced anyway, so these 10mm seem about right to me. And some of those vehicles really are top notch! |
AndrewGPaul | 09 Jun 2012 3:22 a.m. PST |
Chironex, if you click the "customer service" link, it tells you the shipping costs. link ROW is £20.00 GBP for orders less than £100.00 GBP, free for orders over that. As to the rules, link |
Johny Boy | 09 Jun 2012 4:17 a.m. PST |
VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE
very professional, I know I was a sceptic and still have doubts over the issue of issuing some of the product as 15mm, however have to say hats off to Dave and everyone else involved in this in the level of quality of the website and how the concept is being packaged
..i'm off to get some brown sauce to go with possibly a large portion of humble pie
. again very well done all and all the best in this venture |
Samulus | 09 Jun 2012 5:48 a.m. PST |
Hmmm they look impressive as hell but the prices are not quite what i was hoping for. They're a bit more expensive than 15mm, except they're 10mm. A 10mm trooper does not look as good as or is as much fun to paint as a 15mm one. Shame, really. I was planning to jump on this game even if the rules were e (and use FWC) but now I'm gonna have to give it a lot more thought. Certainly not GW prices but not what I was looking for. |
sharkbait | 09 Jun 2012 6:14 a.m. PST |
I really like a lot of the models, but don't want to pick up another scale (15mm, 6mm, and a few 28mm). Some of the vehicles and walkers would probably look good with 15mm minis. I'm OK with the pricing, the "rest of the world" shipping seems a bit high. I wouldn't be ordering over 100GBP worth of stuff, most likely to get the free shipping.
|
Lion in the Stars | 09 Jun 2012 6:26 a.m. PST |
Given the size of the vehicles, that doesn't seem out of line for a pricepoint. Infantry is a bit high, however. 20 figures for 8-9GBP is Battlefront prices. |
Dentatus | 09 Jun 2012 6:26 a.m. PST |
Impressive, professional, gorgeous product. I hate to say it, but those prices are probably consistent with the cost of production, overhead and reasonable profits. I believe the owner has explained his reasons for going with 10mm too. I have to admit if one of my wayward gaming buddies decided to buy into this, I'd be right behind him. Reviews have yet to roll in, but Hawk seems like a company worth investing in. |
Only Warlock | 09 Jun 2012 7:21 a.m. PST |
Good grief! Shipping will stop me from ordering. Damn shame. |
ski2060 | 09 Jun 2012 9:53 a.m. PST |
Yeah, shipping is going to stop me from ordering anything. I wasn't planning on picking this up as a system any time soon, but was planning to pick some Scourge stuff up for Gruntz games. $30 USD shipping for a small package of resin miniatures will not be feasible for me. |
Only Warlock | 09 Jun 2012 10:22 a.m. PST |
Its a shame, too! I wanted some of the post human command walkers to go with my blue moon 15mm Orion infantry! |
arngrimson | 09 Jun 2012 10:43 a.m. PST |
I used to be able to see the hawk website but since it's gone live I just see a blank black page with 3 little boxes with crosses in |
MrHarold | 09 Jun 2012 11:03 a.m. PST |
Yeah, shipping is going to stop me from ordering anything. I wasn't planning on picking this up as a system any time soon, but was planning to pick some Scourge stuff up for Gruntz games. I dunno, order 100 GBP and shipping is free
that's not too bad
20 GBP shipping other wise is steep though. |
Manflesh | 09 Jun 2012 11:16 a.m. PST |
I'm sure some retailers in the states will get their hands on stock soon enough after official release. That should take the nasty edge off of the shipping. One of the funniest comments I saw was someone complaining that they could get a Blood Bowl team for less. That is one criticism that Hawk Wargames can't avoid- they haven't cornered the Fantasy Football market with this release. arngrimson- try piggybacking this link to get in. It worked for me when I had a blip. hawkwargames.com/pages/about Leigh |
arngrimson | 09 Jun 2012 12:38 p.m. PST |
Thanks Manflesh that worked. |
Lovejoy | 09 Jun 2012 1:49 p.m. PST |
Problem with postage is prices have gone through the roof in the last month, especially for boxes and tracked parcels – I'd expect to see similar shipping costs from most UK companies in the near future
. |
Diadochoi | 10 Jun 2012 9:29 a.m. PST |
Regarding postage, it looks like it is a small new company which does not have the manpower to process lots of small orders. Hence, free postage for large orders, but fixed price expensive for small. I suspect other retailers will stock their products soon and so customers with small orders will have somewhere to go in the near future. Regarding prices, the infantry were more than I was expecting, but the larger vehicles were less than I feared – given their size and level of detail. |
sharkbait | 10 Jun 2012 3:05 p.m. PST |
TheWarStore.com will be carrying the Drop Zone Commander stuff. link That'll allow me to buy some minis without incurring massive shipping charges. That's good news! |
Paint it Pink | 22 Jun 2012 1:51 a.m. PST |
I like the look, but I'm currently not in the market to buy stuff, due to the congruent economic downturn and my resulting fallout from employment. :-( On the building front though, I can recommend Field Works 10mm range: link BTW: I love 10mm for SF wargaming, as for me it's the perfect scale compromise for size and cost. |
CptHARM | 01 Aug 2012 3:52 a.m. PST |
I just received my pre-order from Hawk Wargames of their figures and they are wonderful in person! Wargamer on Tour Blog Well worth a closer look if you are looking for some great Sci-Fi stuff thats for sure! |
Manflesh | 01 Aug 2012 4:43 a.m. PST |
I got my stuff through last week- lovely stuff. First game tomorrow. I was going to wait until after playing to post anything here, but the ruleset seems very tidy indeed. Leigh |

Will be interesting to see how the shipping pricing model they've chosen works out for them. Maybe they are hoping retail stores overseas will stock the stuff like FoW? Otherwise, hard to see it catching on outside the UK. I could be wrong, but I'd have thought they would want to tempt people into making small trial orders to see the quality of their stuff and then get hooked. As it is, this is simply inconceivable once shipping is factored into the equation. As they say in Dragon's Den – I'm out. |
PilGrim | 04 Aug 2012 11:01 a.m. PST |
£5.50 GBP to ship a rulebook in the UK seems pretty excessive |
PilGrim | 07 Aug 2012 2:21 a.m. PST |
Just to update that – ordered a set of rules option 1 – buy direct, total cost inc shipping £20.50 GBP option 2 – buy on ebay, total cost £13.50 GBP |
PilGrim | 10 Aug 2012 9:52 p.m. PST |
To update further, rules arrived and theyre a hefty tome,so maybe Hawk were not so excessive with their p&p |
