Warlord's 20% offer last weekend dragged me (not exactly kicking and screaming) into colonial gaming.

I'm aware of Warlord Games (obviously), Wargames Factory, Empress Miniatures, but who else makes appropriate toys for me to play with?

How well would the other ranges sit next to my Warlord toys?

Warlord and Empress are a joint venture so they are perfect together.

Black Tree have a nice range but they are noticably bigger.

I have Wargames Factory and Black Tree with a few Empress cavalry and characters but if I started again it would be all Warlord and Empress.

One of my favorite ranges were the old Foundry ones, when Foundry was affordable. A very long time ago…

There is also Black Tree Design, who do some decent zuluz, unfortunately their brit stuff is closer to 32mm, but really with Empress and Warlord, you dont need much else.

Warlord and Empress – why would need anything else?!

Redoubt do as well – including multi-part figures for different Zulu poses. I bought some but wasn't desperately impressed, however.

Is this a trick question?

There *was* a time when Foundry was affordable?!?

Don't do it (buy wargames factory that is) I'm still having nightmares about them, I was foolish enough to buy a box of each without even seeing them! I'm sorry each to thier own but they really are terrible, sorry guys I've tried building several more since the test piece but they are horrible to put together and just don't look right!

I think Copplestone does some metal 28mm Zulu as well.

the trojan bunny08 Jun 2012 11:31 a.m. PST

Old Glory also has 28mm Zulu War minis. Quite cheap too, as far as metals go.

Dr Mathias Fezian08 Jun 2012 12:30 p.m. PST

NobleHero, Copplestone makes Ngoni and Watuta, which are more or less Zulu offshoots. they're nice figures to be sure, and most people wouldn't be able to tell they aren't Zulu.

For that matter, you could also look at North Star's Matabele.

Rapier Miniatures08 Jun 2012 1:07 p.m. PST

We at Rapierminiatures.co.uk do a range of British and Natal Carabinieers and zulus for this conflict as well.

bsrlee09 Jun 2012 6:50 a.m. PST

Eureka has a fair range of 25/28mm British in various poses, Naval Brigade, some 'natives' and even Zulu teddy bears.

You should also check out Castaway Arts for a variety of Colonials in 25/28mm, including some fairly obscure stuff, like camel mounted infantry, camel packs etc.

Australian postage is fairly reasonable & efficient.

Empress and Warlord Games are good. I own Black Tree Design Zulus. They are excellent figure and paint up well. Then you must question yourself if you want to paint up 380 Zulus like I did (I'm still questioning my sanity on that point, lol).

If you have very deep pockets go with Empress(you generally need alot of zulus)otherwise black tree or old glory is my recommendation…

cavcrazy31 Oct 2012 8:09 p.m. PST

Ral Partha did Zulus as well, but they were small 25's

Modelbuilding…I noticed you charge 32 pounds($50) to ship 1 building. Is that the going rate from the UK?

Old Contemptibles18 Jan 2013 2:36 p.m. PST

Is this a trick question?

I know, it would be easier to list who dosen't make them.

RandallTexas10 Apr 2013 2:45 p.m. PST

Reaper Miniatures from Denton Texas makes beuatiful 28mm Zulus and British Infantry. I'm slowly assembling armies for both.

scarlinosr110 Apr 2013 9:04 p.m. PST

If you're doing Zulu, I have over 225 painted Ral Partha Zulu!! As cavcrazy said though, they are smaller than 28MM. Sal Sr out!!!

Someone someplace, last I knew, was producing much of the old Ral Partha colonials line, and they might be affordable if small by modern standards. Back when I bought my armies for this period, the Zulus were a bargain at $4 USD for a bag of ten. RP was encouraging newbies to get involved with TS&TF, I guess, and it worked for me. Even though they're in full regalia, they can paint up quickly if you spray or dunk them in "Nubian" flesh tones first. Then just paint around the skin and dry-brush the feathers and cow tails.
