Currently, I allow any TMP member to make a proposal (on the Poll Suggestions board) if they feel a particular TMP member should be banned from TMP.

The matter is then brought up in a TMP poll, decided by the majority of those voting.

Should TMP members continue to have the ability to propose the banning of members?

Angel Barracks08 Jun 2012 5:33 a.m. PST

Yes to propose if the member in question keeps breaking TMP rules, but only you can do any actual banning.

I think there should not be a vote to decide the outcome.

Sumatran Rat Monkey08 Jun 2012 5:34 a.m. PST

I'd say, make it more interesting:

The right to propose a ban via poll remains- however, if the proposal goes to an actual poll, and the motion loses, the proposer should, instead, receive the ban they sought on another.

Makes it more interesting, infinitely more amusing, and perhaps dissuade trivial or petty ban proposals, at least in some cases.

I stated my position in the discussion of the current poll to ban the OFM. I think it is a bad idea. There are the stifle button and the dawgghouse for instances of inappropriate behavior and you as the site owner can ban a person though I hope you are judicious in the use of that power.

I agree with angel barracks and Allen57. Your decision is the one that counts.

How many times has this happened though?

Scorpio08 Jun 2012 5:47 a.m. PST

As I have said elsewhere, voting to ban members is a terrible idea. If someone is violating the forum rules, there are already procedures to handle that

Hmm … sort of "It's either him or me" or "This here town sure ain't big enough for the both of us".

NoBodyLovesMe08 Jun 2012 5:58 a.m. PST

Absolutely NO.

You are the editor and owner, YOU run the site NOT the members.

While it is fine that members can make suggestions that is as far as our "powers" should go.

If you feel you need assistance with certain aspects of running the site then you should hire a sub-editor or two.

FoxtrotPapaRomeo08 Jun 2012 5:59 a.m. PST

Your board, your call but I'd err on the side of toleration. I don't read stuff I'm not interested in. And it can be fun watchin' children throwin' mud in the TMP backyard – generally does no harm. Only ban people for patterns of criminal or other strongly anti-social behaviour or language.

JRacel08 Jun 2012 6:00 a.m. PST

NO!!!!

There are reasons not to allow mob rule. This is absolutely NO from me. Horrible idea.

Part of what I pay for on this site is editorial responsibility; that would be you, Bill.

I propose Trial By Combat for the parties concerned.

Seriously though, I'd say no. Bill, you're the Guvnor, you sort 'em out.

nazrat08 Jun 2012 6:39 a.m. PST

No. The latest one is yet another personal attack on the OFM. He has requested time and again not to have polls about him and you continue to put them up. It's a bad, bad, BAD decision on your part. And protests of not wanting to quell free speech fall flat, since you snip and clip, and ban where ever you want. Which is your right as moderator. But moderate, for god's sake! Don't do things because you claim the "will of the people" make you-- that's a cop-out.

Having a poll to ban someone is just weird. Just ban them and be done with it, or ignore them. You don't owe anyone an explanation, and asking for a consensus just makes things worse.

It's like firing someone. If I have to, I do it quickly and cleanly, without any public drama.

Asinine idea. And polls to ban a member should be considered personal attacks. Perhaps better moderating would be helpful too.

flooglestreet08 Jun 2012 7:48 a.m. PST

NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT, I can not condemn this idea enough. Who ever proposed it should be banned ;)

Patrick R08 Jun 2012 7:50 a.m. PST

Of course, there should be the option to ban people, how else will the petty and vengeful get their fill of mayhem to raise their egos ?

Maybe another way to ban people?

Sounds like a Poll suggestion to me…

richarDISNEY08 Jun 2012 8:04 a.m. PST

No. Decidedly NO.
If you left it up to a vote and only 10 people vote on it and 300 vote No Option, where is the unlucky bloke?

NO.
Bad idea all around.

Mainly28s08 Jun 2012 8:13 a.m. PST

Absolutely not. If someone offends against the group, he will be handled with the existing methods. Proposing a ban on anyone is ridiculous- where will it end? Would the Editor abide by a proposal to ban him, if one were made and passed the vote?

plutarch 6408 Jun 2012 8:13 a.m. PST

No.

ChicChocMtdRifles08 Jun 2012 8:30 a.m. PST

If you're going to banish someone by a poll, then you need to get them entered in by a poll. If you, alone, can let someone in why make kicking them out a community effort?
