Hi all! Thought I'd share an AAR for the Midway anniversary game that was played at my local club tonight. The scenario was the Japanese counterstrike against the USS Yorktown. This was a tense game and could have swung either way and I think pretty much everyone enjoyed themselves. Midway is a fascinating battle with strokes of luck mixed with incredible acts of courage and it was a pleasure to get the club members talking about it and remembering the bravery of the aviators and sailors that took part on both sides.
The full AAR can be found over at my blog (though I must apologise for the poor photography). You'll have to read it to find out whether the Yorktown made it or not! :) link |

Good game Ian. Thought the Ack-Ack was simple but very effective as an item. You should post pictures and a tutorial. M. The carrier is pointing right at my heart! |

Fast work putting that onto your blog! I think everyone enjoyed themselves. The Japanese missed a trick by not splitting up their zeroes or sending them ahead of the bombers to disrupt the Wildcats; equally we Americans should have kept a couple of Wildcats over the carrier as a final line of defence. Easy to see after the game, of course. The numbers worked out well. As for the ack-ack – we did manage one hit, but it was ineffective! Maybe allow that any hit prevents the plane from dropping its ordanance that turn
other than that, I wouldn't want it dominating the game. |

Pah! Our attack went completely according to plan. Not our fault 2/3 of the CAP abandoned you for some ineffective Turkey Shooting. Mind, we did lose our Ace late on. |

Honestly, the American tactic of taking the Vals head on wasn't great! If they had gone wide and come laterally across the formation I imagine there would have been no Vals left after the first pass, especially with the number of fighters over there! As it was, they bagged a few but took too long to get round for the remainder. As for the flak, I do think the 1" guns should be a bit more deadly. In real life they accounted for two of the seven Vals, although one did drop it's bomb first which obliterated one of the gun tubs! I'm definitely happy with the scenario, though. All we're talking about is minor tweaks. |
