Just wanted to put it out to those who are interested on or like gaming with 1/4800 ships that Roe from Tiny Thingamajigs has put out the Graf Zeppelin set of 2 with 12x Bf-109, 6x Ju-87 Stuka DBand 6x Fi-67 biplane TB. The Illustious set of 4 with Supermarine Seafire (x3),Fairey Barracuda (x3),Fairey Swordfish (x3) and Hawker Hurricane (x3) each. The French Carrier Bearn with 4 Dewoitine D.373, 6 Loire LN.401,
6 Dewoitine D.790 (navalised D.520) and 6 V-156-F (SB2U Vindicator exports). The French Joffre(1940) with – Dewoitine D.790 (x12), Breguet 810 (x11), V-156-F Vindicator (x12) And finally the Italian Aquila(1943)
Sparviero(1943),Bonfoglietti(1932 design)with 24x Re.2001 and 12x Ju-87 Stukas in the set. This adds quite a bit to the range that is available to game with and opens up some more opportunities and scenarios. grin . Robert

Wow those are some tiny planes!!!

To ask the obvious question, have these actually been successfully tested? Looks great, but I can't help having doubts about the actual print quality….

BattlerBritain01 Jun 2012 7:02 a.m. PST

Moreover – how are you supposed to paint those planes?

What about putting decals on them?

Dom – even you couldn't make decals that small!

Well a standard RAF top wing roundel (56") is just over a third of a millimetre across at 1/4800 – or 9 pixels at 600 dpi. So no, no I couldn't….

The carriers have been printed and are just as excellent as the photo. I happen to own a few grin. The aircraft just as so. Though very hard to get off the sprue. But that goes without saying due to the size wink. I haven't tried to put any markings on them though.

I shall definitely be doing my 1941 Bismarck campaign idea using 1/4800 but it's a project for the future once I've rounded out an existing collection a bit more.

Interesting to see that the decision has been for actual planes rather than a decal of the deck and planes as has been done for the 1/6000 models. I almost think just painting the planes in overall sea grey would be enough at this microscopic scale.

jameshammyhamilton01 Jun 2012 7:30 a.m. PST

I saw some vey nice 1/144 scale near future Sci-Fi tanks at the UK Games Expo. They had lots of detail and were good and strong.

The spaceships that the same people had on display were even better.

Mako1101 Jun 2012 7:59 a.m. PST

Well, if my math is correct, 36 pixels at 1/2400th DPI should work for design and printing of the decals.

Of course, cutting them out and applying them to the planes is a whole other challenge.

Ok – those are absolutely freaking amazing. I'd love to see some pics of the actual objects.

Very impressive.

Hi everyone,

Actually I only ever planned to have recon seaplanes on surface action ships, i.e. with floats

…pushed a bit and then added aircrafts as deck parks for aircraft carriers

…then over the side, now there will be flights forming up around the carriers o_O

Link of my Bearn with some 3D printed 1/4800 aircrafts (Warning: Large image; please note the biplanes are Ro43 and the single winged ones are Re2001 from my Italian CVs pack… and my futile attempt of hand-painting the roundels)

You could spy on the Supermarine Walrus (or at least how I modelled it to be) on the right-hand Lion

Dale Woodside posted this in my Group,

"Please note. Do not expect to see the incredible detail of
Roe's 1/600 and other aircraft. It simply can't be done in
FUD with its 100 micron limit. However, there is enough
size and shape difference between the AC that with a given
nation's distinct aircraft basic color(s) applied, like a
solid shade on top and a different shade on the bottom,
and a dab of paint for the cockpit, that you should be
able to tell them apart on a table for war gaming purposes.
Also, a toothpick can put nice little red dots on the wings
for all you IJN lovers out there (that is, when we get some
IJN AC). ;-)

In addition to pictures of his CV sprues (except the Bearn),
here is a list of all of the aircraft pics and what they are:

I think that this really adds a whole new dimension to the scale. Robert

Great ships and aircraft, even if small. I would suggest that the markings have to be very impressionistic but are paintable.

Anybody got the capability to do decals at this resolution?

Al

Not from what I understand Al. Like dale mentioned the ones that would be the easiest to represent would be the Japanese. laugh. I'm not looking for 1/600 type resolution. Robert
