Thanks for the snapshots of the sprues and the review Stuart. They look great. I will be buying some myself. |
Happy Wanderer | 28 May 2012 9:42 p.m. PST |
some of the most anticipated figures for some time I think. I hope our friends at Victrix do extra head variants, in metal, that can be used to create as much variety as possible. Heads with Thessalian type hats, head bands ala Cretan Archers, a few different type without helmets
.long hair like Spartan type, etc This will really add to the utility of the Victrix range. Fingers crossed. These figures are great. Happy Wanderer |

I too am looking forward to these so thanks for you very informative review. |
Khusrau | 29 May 2012 2:36 a.m. PST |
The Immortal Miniatures range, since purchased by Warlord is also fantastic. Really lovely sculpts. I would be interested if anyone has done a comparison between the Victrix and Immortal sizes and sculpts? Ahh.. they have

.long hair like Spartan type, etc This will really add to the utility of the Victrix range. No idea about metal heads, but my understanding is that they will be cranking out four different plastic hoplite sets (Athenian, Spartan, Theban and mercenary), each of which would probably come with a different set of plastic heads. |

Thanks Stuart- that was a nice write up with clear pictures of sprues. So far looking good. I am interested to see how different will be the Theban and Mercenary box sets (apart from the Boeotian helmet which we can see in the previews). Depending on that I will probably be picking up a box to add some variety to the Immortal/Warlord boxex. @ Khusrau- I saw a lot of discussion on those threads that you listed about the relative merits of each, but no one has yet put up both ranges side by side in the same picture so that we can see how close they are. i.e. if want to include both will they be best in separate units or mixed in together in same unit, or even parts mixed together for even more variety. Cheers James |

Thanks for the review Stuart! I am really looking forward to receiving my order now.. Hopefully they'll match with Warlords Phalangites sizewise. Can't wait for the Spartans, 300 of them seems like nice future project :-) Cheers SP |

I have been looking forward to these for some time. Glad to see they are finally out. Hope there will be some vendors carrying these at Historicon as I dislike doing overseas mail order. Now that Vitcix has released these I will be able to easily finish my Athenians and other forces for my Peloponnesian War battles. |
flowerofbattle | 29 May 2012 8:27 a.m. PST |
Thanks for the close-ups! Its just sad to see that there are no extra heads on the sprue. To be stuck with those Phrygian/Thracian helmets when doing the early Classic era is not too great. Another project for the modding bench. |
wargame insomniac | 29 May 2012 9:21 a.m. PST |
@ flowerofbattle- personally I am glad- less Corinthian helmets to dispose of. I would happily take any Phrygian/Thracian helmets off your hands. Cheers James |

Another project for the modding bench. Well, if there are 48 figures in a box I suppose one could treat it like a 40 figure set, with pieces for 8 extras. |
flowerofbattle | 29 May 2012 10:53 a.m. PST |
Delbruck -- that's the beauty of plastics -- an abundance of figures to feed my luxurious habits! James -- I might just send those helmets your way, just need to get my hands on a couple of boxes first :) It could be dangerous to have those helmets around the house as the temptation to start another period might get too strong. |

Updated with size comparison: link |
malekithau | 29 May 2012 4:00 p.m. PST |
Thanks for the size comparison. I have some Immortal/Warlord hoplites and cannot bring myself to use them with the rest of my figures they are just too small even next to Foundry. The Victrix look closer to the size of my other figs. I may have to build some complete armies now rather then just as mercenaries in other armies. On another front I can see some scope for possibly converting some Warlord Phalangites with heads etc from this lot. They appear to be about the same size though Warlord may be a little smaller. Big heads on small bodies? I'll just say they are the latest Flames of War release

Ouch, Immortal looks tiny to the Victrix |
wargame insomniac | 29 May 2012 6:38 p.m. PST |
Thanks Stuart for the 2 comparison shots. had nt realised that Immortal/Warlord Hoplites were so small as had nt really stood them next to other units. I love the look of Victrix Hoplite with the Phrygian helmet- will definitely suit the later period that I am interested in. Doubt I will be doing much mixing with Immortal/Warlord ones though- fine as different units and would be happy to have both in my army. Cheers James |
flowerofbattle | 30 May 2012 2:29 a.m. PST |
But the Immortal/Warlord does have a thinner integral base.. If the integral base is thickened a bit they should look closer in size. Not extremely similar but a lot closer in size than I had anticipated -- thank you Stuart! |
Happy Wanderer | 30 May 2012 2:33 a.m. PST |
So gents, With these being larger figures, what minis will fit do you think? The recent splurge of offerings from Warlord all seem tiny in comparison. I bought several and declared them unusable as they were so slight
.most disappointing. So of the larger sizes figures we have; Wargames Factory Aventine? Renegade? Relic? Foundry
others? Cheers

mister ed | 30 May 2012 3:47 a.m. PST |
Gorgon Studios' Spartans, which are ex-Artizan. Also some of their Etruscan hoplites are very usable as Greeks. Bang on the same size as Foundry. Crusader do a limited range. How big are the Sgt Major miniatures Molon Labe range – (the ex-Vendel ones)? |
malekithau | 30 May 2012 4:59 a.m. PST |
Happy, The good news is that the actual new Warlord, as opposed to the Immortal, figs are a bit bigger. The Sarmatians are not bad at all. John 0 |
Suetonius Paullinus | 30 May 2012 6:49 a.m. PST |
They seem to be a good enough match with Warlords Phalangites. I'm happy :-) Thanks for the pics! Cheers SP |

Thanks very much for this. Tremendously helpful pictures and review. Would you say the Victrix scale is heroic 28mm? Special Request: You wouldn't happen to have an Old Glory ancient figure for side-by-side comparison, would you? |
Scarab Miniatures | 03 Jun 2012 2:19 a.m. PST |
Happy You also have the Scarab Miniatures Greek and Spartan ranges link Our figs match up well with the new Victrix and our psiloi should be very useful supporting the new miniatures! I have a victrix sprue and will do an assembly soon along with a picture. Ether drake, from memory, I would suggest the Old Glory would match better with the warlord/immortal figures unless the OG match with the Saleh sculpted Foundry Greeks, in which case, you should be OK with the Victrix. kind regards Rob Broom scarabminiatures.com warandconquest.co.uk |
Eclipsing Binaries | 03 Jun 2012 8:52 a.m. PST |
The greek and spartan range from Black Tree were slightly bigger than the Saleh Foundry ranges so probably a good match for the new Victrix figures. Colin |

Stuart Thanks for the very helpful commentary – I asked Victrix a question about the figures and they came back to me overnight, so this augurs well. Noticed another paint job on the Steve Dean forum, have to say I prefer your efforts, seems more of a battlefield veteran! link Garry |

So of the larger sizes figures we have; Wargames Factory Aventine? Renegade? Relic? Foundry
others? ----------- Crusader – they do quite a lot of ancients incl troops that could feature in Successor etc armies A&A I'm quite pleased to hear they are on the heroic side |
Suetonius Paullinus | 16 Jun 2012 4:28 a.m. PST |
My Athenians arrived today! Seems a great set of miniatures :-) Only point of critique is the number of heads/ helmets. More options would have been better IMHO but maybe they'll give us some separate metal ones like they did for their Napoleonics (hint..). Cheers SP |

Please forgive me for resurrecting this thread, but I am wondering if there are enough of the horse-haired-Mohawk helmets for each and every mini in the pack. To me, that's iconic Greek and that's what I would like to build. |
