Apologies if this has been asked before but . . . did Loyalist regiments carry colours in the American revolution?

I hope so- soilders deserve some colours- if they don't run when they shouldn't. It's good for morale as well :)

I have seen surviving relics for Butler's Rangers. Now, if there would be any unit you would expect to NOT carry colours, it would be them. But, it seems that they even had them at Wyoming.

I first heard bout them in a book on the Wyoming mssacre. I first heard about the book in a local Sunday newspaper, which mentioned in passing that they had been captured in the War of 1812, and are now at the West Point museum. What makes me believe them is because they lack the red saltire of St. Patrick.

I also saw a guidon for the Kings American Dragoons in an old National Geographic, in an article about New Brunswick.
Ah! Here it is! Google is my friend.

The color of the colour has obviously faded from the dark blue of a "King's" regiment.
It looks very much "by the book", hainna?

Finally, I believe that a colour survives for the Queen's Rangers.

I always say that the Loyalists would be "more British than the British". I would think that any Loyalist line troops like deLancey's or Skinner's, or even Lord Rawdon's Volunteers of Ireland should at least be given the benefit of the doubt and the wargamer as the generous Colonel of the regiment should grant them a stand of colours. And, they should follow the rules in the 1768 Warrant regarding matching the facing colors.

I recently bought a set of colors for my Volunteers of Ireland from the Flag Dude. I also have a set for my Queens Rangers from GMB.

What figures do you use for the Volunteers of Ireland, Bob?

epturner29 May 2012 7:23 a.m. PST

Some did and some, well, it's speculation…

And, Bob, I'll second the OFM's question about the VoI's?

I'm using Perry's Saratoga figures for the VoI. Closest headgear I could find…
Facings are mostly covered by belting,so..
Some also have the tall gaiters..
I've only painted up 2 stands,12 figures. Will post pics when I finish.

Regimental flag is similar to the Queens Rangers only green, and the central motif says: 2nd American Regt(?)

Bob;
Well, I'm not going to Rock Ford Plantation now. Real Army stuff getting in the way. Or I'd try to find you.

One of these days…

I'd like to see those pics. Could you please send them to my "other" email when you do post them?

Many thanks.

Cool.
At least you did not use Grenze. That owuld have been the easy way out.
Too bad the Perrys seem to have wandered off the WAI. I would have bought them, had they made them. grin

They haven't forgotten the AWI (it is one of AP's favourite periods). Once the queue of Napoleonic plastics at Renedra has quietened down, probably late this year, the plastic British will be tooled and I've been told that there will be more metals to support and accompany them.
