I am looking for a set of rules that meet a few basic requirements for use with my Gundam collection.

6mm-ish scaled
Straightforward and fairly simple, 1 hr tops.
Works well with a few big guys vs many smaller ones
Mecha, tanks and Infantry are required

Something along the complexity of say Heroscape would be great, pretty easy, doesn't have to have a lot of stats, but special rules to compensate.

Any good ideas? I'll post some pics of my WIP board and figures at a later time to satiate the masses :)

Depending on whether you want a player to control a company or platoon, Strike Leader has versions that cover both sizes, and Gruntz (platoon or smaller per side) could probably be re-done using cm instead of inches for 6mm.

Dirtside is sort of anti-mecha, but is 6mm and free. Perhaps more complicated than 1 hour though.

I am leaning towards 6 or 7 stands at the most (everything is on Hex bases), want to keep it small and each stand being it's own figure if you will. Essentially a skirmish game, just smaller scale. I considered using SoBH or Sci-Fi equivalent, but it seems a bit too simplified.

You might look for Prophesy of War. Its free, and I think available on the 6mm Yahoo group (or maybe 6mm sci-fi group).

Mecha! May be a little faster than what you are looking for, but a fun system. Currently available from Scale Creep as a pdf link .

Mekton Zeta and Mekton Z+. If that's too slow for you then try the GM's screen (or Tactical Display) that has the Mekton Z: The Movie rules. It's an rpg, but you can easily toss the rules that don't relate to combat.

Also consider Dream Pod Nine's early Silhouette Jovian Chronicles games (before Lightning Strike, or 2nd edition with it's Generic Silhouette System + Player Handbook format, and the short but sad 'me too D20 compatible' era. Stick with the old stuff. )

I think you'd need the 1st edition Rulebook and the Technical Manual. Just ignore the RPG stuff. You just want the wargame rules and the construction system.

I think you'd need the Rulebook and the Technical Manual.

Also, I greatly enjoyed the old Mecha! rules from Seventh Street -> Flagship -> Scale Creep Games. So I recommend you try those as well. You don't HAVE to do the Aztec setting. It had a simple costed construction system that let you build what you want more or less.

Second the 1st Edition Jovian Chronicles stuff. Hit up DrivethruRPG, you can get those PDFs for like $6 USD each.

I mean, the only thing that is missing from gaming Gundam is the license from Bandai!

I really liked the JC1 rules, lost mine in a flood – getting them in PDF seems like a great idea.

I'd say Mekton's the best match for your needs – Jovian Chronicles is more setting-specific and (if anything) too realistic, while Mecha! has a few too many restrictions on its build-your-own system.

I made up a set of rules for hex-based 6mm mechs called Minimech.. I haven't added anything for vehicles or infantry yet, but it is planned. You could always help playtest the vehicle and infantry rules.

I would describe it as something close to a beer and pretzels Battletech.

The Toy Battle System game Giant Monster Rampage Deluxe might work. It has a section about mechs in the optional rules chapter. There is also a free scenario that expands the mech rules. GMR also has swarm and minion rules to allow for tanks and infantry. The upcoming Atomic Super Humans Deluxe, which is fully compatable with GMR, will feature squad and vehicle rules. link

To be honest, I have the Mecha rules from you, I don't particularly care for them, theres nothing /wrong/ with them, they just aren't what I want.

I may look in to Mekton. Otherwise I feel like I might wind up with a simple variant of Heroscape, really, it shouldn't be that hard to alter such a basic game system to fit my needs.

blackscribe25 May 2012 3:05 p.m. PST

One of the setting books for Mekton was pretty Gundam-specific. I can't remember which one, unfortunately.

Lion in the Stars25 May 2012 7:02 p.m. PST

If you have the JC1 book with the vehicle design rules, who cares what the default setting actually is.

JC's rules have hand-to-hand combat between big stompy robots and can handle other vehicles just fine.

They even have details that make the Exo-armors more like characters than mere vehicles.

The Gundam Collection Group for 1/400 scale have basic rules. You can find it in: facebook.com/groups/gundamcollection

Also yahoo groups: games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Gundam_Collection_Tactical_Battles

Much as I hate to say it: Heavy Gear Blitz

Rogue Zoat17 Sep 2012 4:37 a.m. PST

Probably a bit late now, but I tried out these rules at the weekend with Strategy of Gundam figures. It went quite well I'd say. Decent ruleset and very quick.

Rogue, for what I was reading on that link, there are not too many unit stats available. In the Gundam facebook and yahoo group there are hundreds of stats for almost all minis. These stats are made according to the numbers each minis have under the original base. Also these stats were playtested in Japan by fans and players and translated to english.

Scadian, some people in my country are playing Heavy Gear (about 6 of them) and to tell you the truth the minis are too expensive for their size and the rulebook is not that good. If we talk about mechs stay with Mechwarrior/Battletech and Gundam or any other generic game.
