This is sort of WW2 Media related, so I'll post it here for lack of a better location. Yahoo has apparently just initiated some new feature, since they're slathering blandishments for it all over their pages. Note the tasteful and well-thought-out url: axis.yahoo.com In a way I suppose it's appropriate – Hitler was certainly a yahoo. Still, I can't see this passing without comment from more easily offended people than myself. |

Lost me. Does 'Axis' only mean a bad thing? Does that mean my Daughter can't sit her 'Final' Exam? Ask me for a 'solution' to a Crossword? Invite me to join her to play on the wii in my 'Livingroom'? What about Tony the Tiger? The Pink Panther? Micky Mauss? Arthur the Hetzer? (OK, Not Arthur the Hetzer.) Sorry Rich, I think it's just you. But I am willing to be surprised. Pat |

Took me a while to understand what you meant. Do you know what "axis" means? I think this falls well into the category of being over sensitive and looking for issues that really aren't there. |
| Norman D Landings | 24 May 2012 5:29 a.m. PST |
Meh
nothing offensive about the term "axis". American football doesn't seem to have contracted nazi-ism from it's use of the term "blitz", "Joy Division" rocked, (as did "New Order") and I look raaather spiffy in striped pyjamas. |

it should mebbe have been instaed " axiis.yahoo.com "

So what should the Earth now spin on if axis is evil word? |
| Pictors Studio | 24 May 2012 6:30 a.m. PST |
It could spin on its allies? |

And what would the world of math be without the 'X or Y axis' ? |

Meh, I've already had two emails forwarded to me by friends who monitor the tinfoil hat end of the internet, calling for a mass boycott of yahoo because they're insensitive/Holocaust deniers/closet neo-Nazis/etc. Trust me, while I don't see any more of an issue with it myself that you do (except for the annoying popup) it has managed to offend some people already. Which is predictable, in today's world. You may now discuss how offended you are that people are taking offense. :) |

Sounds to me like some people have too many degrees! |
Chef Lackey Rich | 24 May 2012 7:21 a.m. PST |
Judging by the varying literacy levels in the different emails, I'd say it's a split between too much education and too little. If you give it a few hours I'm sure both ends of the spectrum will be attacking one another for "not getting" why they should be offended in the first place. Nothing quite like a good online loony fight. Thankfully I can count on getting the highlights from Jim and Roger, rather than having to read everything myself. |
John the OFM | 24 May 2012 7:55 a.m. PST |
When I get up in the nmorning, the first thing I do is determine what I shuld be offended about. That did not make my short list. Maybe tomorrow. |

Hitler was certainly a yahoo. I got the impression Yahoos were "a crude, brutish or obscenely coarse person". Whereas Hitler always struck me as as rather a prim and proper prude. I doubt he was particularly brutish either, the sort of fellow who could order any amount of brutality but probably couldn't do it himself. I recall reading when Goebbels visited one of the camps he was violently ill. |

I got the impression Yahoos were "a crude, brutish or obscenely coarse person". How very Swiftian of you. "Stupid" is also an acceptable definition for the word when it isn't capitalized. Hitler's antics on the Eastern Front should qualify him for the term, methinks. |

I suppose we'll also need to retcon The Jimi Hendrix album "Axis Bold As Love" and the name of the '80s rock band, The John Butcher Axis, that was inspired by that title. Of course, that's besides the point. Being offended is empowering and because Yahoo is a big enough target, this WILL be offensive to enough "netizens" to cause a stir. Eventually, we can probably expect to see a name change and a big mea culpa from Yahoo. Wash, rinse, repeat
. |
| Volstagg Vanir | 24 May 2012 9:27 a.m. PST |
Well then, Since 'NAZI" means means "idiot" or "clumsy oaf" faktoider.nu/nazi_eng.html TMP link and 'YAHOO" means "a coarse or brutish person; lout; philistine; yokel."
.and since Hitler was both
.
Don't you see? ¡¡¡ Yahoo = Nazi !!! ¡ ¡ ¡
. and MASON jars are HERMETICallly sealed ! ! ! |

From the above it sounds like you are one of those who is critical of Yahoo! for using the "axis" reference (i.e. you made a sarcastic remark about their "tasteful and well-thought-out url"). Then you posted: Trust me, while I don't see any more of an issue with it myself that you do (except for the annoying popup) it has managed to offend some people already. If you "didn't see
an issue" then why make a sarcastic remark about their choice of URL? Or maybe you just wanted to get folks revved up here while reserving your choice of fence side once things got going? ;-) w. |

No, I can be amazed at a big company not spotting a rather obvious "hot button" word choice in advance without actually being offended by the term myself. Being able to see a viewpoint doesn't commit me to agreeing with it. And it really isn't a well-thought-out url, although you could question whether any url is tasteful. Hmmm – I wonder if
tasteful.com I stand corrected. That is, indeed, a tasteful url. :) Of course, this might also be an experiment to see how many definitions of the word "axis" TMPers can dig up, and whether they can be clever about working them into the thread. If that were the case, I'd be a little disappointed at the lack of a cervicle vertebra reference, although making a joke out of it would really be a back-breaking job. |

And it really isn't a well-thought-out url, although you could question whether any url is tasteful. It's just the word "axis"
sheesh. And nobody even mentioned the infamous GWB "Axis of Evil" thing yet. I guess there is probably little hope for my literary review site: thepenismightier.com Or my psychiatrist patient-review accumulator: reviewtherapist.com What's the world coming to??? Cheers w. |
