I wonder what you'd have to do wrong to get transferred to that unit? Run over the generals dog? |

Quite interesting tank. Hardly a tank. An armoured vehicle, yes, but certainly not a tank! It's a Forward Observation vehicle. |

Yeah, but the UE design always looked like it was a Moonbuggy-now there's a idea

That last photo is very interesting. The SPArty is built on Lorraine 37Ls. Then we've got one 37 observation vehicle and one based on the UE. Note the UE ammunition carriers in the background. Also interesting is that 2 of the SPAarties are not in a disruptive scheme -- presumably they are panzer gray. Note that the crew of the guns have (mostly) black panzer wraps, but the observers are wearing feldgrau tunics. |

Great photo!!! this unit was all equipped with French vehicles, did they do any damage on the Normandy fighting? |

Thanks Margard, I really thought it was a tank. |

Thanks Margard, I really thought it was a tank. Apparently Armand did
And of course to anyone who works in the media, anything that's armoured and has tracks is a "tank"! |

Good point Margard. By memory, the 21° Panzer Division in Normandy used them as a Commander vehicle. Even the chief of the Pz Div. had one of them. Like it very much!. Have you seen the other variants?
I had never seen the "Sicherungsfahrzeug UE (f)" before. Any info about them? Amicalement Armand |

The Sicherungsfahrzeug UE (f) was from memory, built by the Luftwaffe for use as an airfield defence vehicle. They used UEs in a variety of roles including as aircraft tows. The real life photo is of one of the SP artillery batteries from 21st Panzer Division in Normandy. |

The unit photographed is a battery of Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment 155, which formed the artillery component of the newly-reformed 21. Panzer-Division. However, this photo was taken in the middle of 1943, hence the dark (grey) scheme oversprayed with the lighter (probably dark yellow) scheme. It shouldn't therefore be taken as representative of how the unit looked during the Normandy Campaign. By D-Day the unit had been repainted in the standard (by then) scheme of dark yellow with red-brown and olive-green camouflage. The SP batteries of Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment 155 also upgraded to more advanced versions of Lorraine OP vehicles (with faceted, sloped armour) which replaced the OP vehicles shown above. However, the UE OP vehicles were almost certainly cascaded down to other units in the locality. |

One of the Lorraine OPs that Mark refers to above. |
