I saw this available at amazon.co.uk Link: link
Only in Region 2! Anyone seen this series? And is it any good? And is it available on Region 1 or Region 0 format? Also, while I'm at it, how about "Four Years Of Thunder"? the 4 part WW1 air doc. that I taped(on VHS) off the History Channel back in about 1997? Anyone know if this is out on DVD? I see it's available for Australia only, even though it was made in the US! Any help would be appreciated.

I saw it in 1977, and remember it as being pretty good. Then again, I was a lot younger then…

Ditto Richard Humm's comment.

I remember watching model world on BBC2 around the same time and they showed all the aircraft were remote control..Its all Its remember about the series though

I remember it, thought it was great at the time, but then I was only 14. The aircraft used in the aerial shots were radio control, or most were anyway. I seem to remember an Eindecker featured a lot and I think a BE2c both (?) of which were models.Very realistic ones mind you.

Belle and Blade has the Wings series, I remember seeing the boxes in the WWI section last weekend at the MFCA show. I don't know what region they are though.

Great series, got it on DVD as a crimble pressie a couple of years ago. Recommended but it was filmed in an era before CGI so if you are looking for Red Baron style dog fights you will be disappointed, the strength is in the acting and the script.

If in doubt check out the clips on You Tube.

@Doug: There was no policy for shooting the observers, but it makes for TV drama I guess.

That is one slooooow cranking system. The winches were motorized. Later, they just hauled the bag down by driving a truck off at speed with the cable attached to the truck bed, and run through a metal loop anchored to the ground….

I remember that I had measles when this was on (I was 8). The only thing I can recall is the scene where one of the groundcrew didn't step back fast enough after cranking the propeller and lost his hands. Oh and I seem to remember one of the lead actors had a rather luxuriant moustache. I think it was shown just before 'The Good Life'.

For those interested, here's a bit about the aircraft/models used:

Thanks to everyone for the responses! This place is amazing! Even more amazing is that after gweirda posted that link(fantastic!) I realized not only had I seen that exact aircraft in August of 1971, I have a picture of it with me & my buddy staring at it! I probably saw it fly, I don't remember exactly, as I was in heaven the entire time I was up there! Evzone, I certainly didn't expect CGI dogfights, btw! I got interested in WW1 aviation by Snoopy & The Royal Guardsmen's Red Baron tunes (I guess, it's the only thing that I can remember that would have gotten my attention in the mid 1960's) I did MAKE my parents take me to the drive-inn theater, in 1966 to see "The Blue Max" & WW1 air has been my first love ever since!(thanks, Mr. Hunter)Jtkimmel, Belle & Blade have the US comedy series "Wings" & the original movie, but this BBC series is not listed on their website. Again, THANKS to ya all, & if anyone ever stumbles across this on DVD, in a format that will play in the states, PLEASE post it on TMP. Thanks again,
Peter

Belle & Blade have the US comedy series "Wings" & the original movie, but this BBC series is not listed on their website.

Odd that its not on the website, they definitely were the WW1 BBC series boxes I saw at their display last week, not the comedy or movie. Maybe shoot them an email and ask?

Ceterman24 May 2012 12:37 p.m. PST

Thanks, jtkimmel, I'll do that!

Failing that, look on the internet for your DVD player model and instructions on how to make it multi-regional. Normally quite easy to do and makes life a lot easier all round.

And failing that, consider watching it on your computer.

Timmo uk24 Jun 2012 9:53 a.m. PST

I remember it well and although when young I thought it lacked 'pace and action' reflecting it was probably well put together and worth watching again.

Volleyfire25 Jun 2012 5:53 a.m. PST

Thanks for the link gweirda, I can well remember buying RCME in 1977 just to read the article about the model aircraft used in the prog.
