Just when you thought it couldn't get WORSE!!!!

Wow!
I've never heard of this. The brain image is the stuff of nightmares. I do think Taenia Solium would be a nice name for a Sci Fi 'femme fatale'.

I will never again eat pork.

Its better you don't know about some things.

I believe there has been some work on trying to establish medieval and later (pre-sewer) parasite infection rates from "fossilized" European cesspits. It would be interesting to apply that data back to reported symptoms from historical cases and their similarity to these symptoms.

I wonder if the beef version (Taenia saginata) does the same thing? Basic lesson, of course, is to cook the crap out of everything. The main place I buy salad just had a listeria recall, so I am feeling a bit paranoid right now.

Horrifying.

With all the 'recalls' for listeria, salmonilla etc, publicity about 'pink slime' meat 'byproducts', more 'flesh-eating bacteria' outbreaks….and now THIS….

1. Watching what you eat and from where….AND proper food preparation and handling techniques are more important than ever! (and for those who like their meat 'rare'???)

2. On the other 'tentacle'….this does add a WHOLE new 'level' of realism and 'story ideas' to Zombie games….or 'post-apocalyptic' role-playing concepts, provided you want MORE 'realistic' game scenarios…without having to 'stretch' the science too much!

Add to that the 'frakking' going on at various points around the world, add a touch of 'Crack in the World' and '2012', 'Monsters' and maybe a few tour-bus-sized asteroid impacts…(like we've had HOW many 'near misses' in the last 6 months????)…

You could have an 'multi-mini-pocalypse(s)'…where it's not ONE major cause for civilization's downfall…but a series, like 'dominos'….that result in an unstoppable chain of events that overwhelm our civilization's ability to 'cope' with it…on an international scale.

Unprecedented 'solar storms/CME's' end up crashing the mainframes/communications and most electronic devices…(like The Day the Earth Stood Still Mk 2), and outbreaks of e-coli, listeria, brain-worms, 'red-tide' from all the fresh-water melting of glaciers and local climate change….increase in localized faults 'giving way'/giant sink-holes…(especially around all those 'nuke-testing sites'…)

The USA, (let alone the world), could be FRAGMENTED into literally DOZENS, (if not hundreds) of 'nation-states'…or little 'baronies'….with different levels of technology and resources etc…depending on location(s).

If you thought the inter-province/inter-nacine wars after break-up of soviet union were bad….imagine that spread out all over the planet….as some areas will collapse into total anarchy due to NO access to any resources….and others 'selling to highest bidder'…with NO 'overall' police force or international 'pressures' (like the UN was supposed to be able to do)….

'Gamma World' would be 'kid's play'…compared to the REAL horror of the situations that would arise….(imagine all those nuclear waste storage pools, losing their cooling water and catching fire??? Would make Chernoybl look 'tame')

Not saying it WILL happen…but with 2012 staring us in the face…and all the WEIRD STUFF in news lately…it does make you wonder! (and is great 'modern/post-apoc game fodder')…
Slishfully,
Sgt DWW-btod

Uh, yuck.

(But yes, good ideas for any games dealing with zombies)

There is also a parasitic bacteria that usually resides in the intestines, but can attack the brain under the right conditions. I remember reading about a case where they couldn't figure out what was going on with a girl's brain and when the surgeons opened her up, they immediately smelled fecal matter. Basically, the bacteria were digesting her brain.
