Just returned from Target, where I bought some of Matchbox MRAPs.

And there I saw new Matchbox Abrams tank. Unfortunately I did not have any ruller with me, so I am not sure if its good for 15mm or not?

picture

Here are real abrams size measurements

So can someone tell me if its good for 15mm or not, because its great model.

wolvermonkey21 May 2012 10:14 p.m. PST

I picked up 2 of the desert colored ones for my 15mm guys. I think they look good next to it. The hatches look close enough to me too that a 15mm guy would fit. And they are close enough in size when compared to my GZG and Brigade Models stuff too.

Would folks like and use a keychain fob marked with, 6,10,15,20,25,28,32mm markings.

Maybe a 1, 2, and 3 mm mark for bases?

Abrams hull (without turret) should have same height as 15mm figure. Does anyone have photo of tank next to 15mm fig or ruller?

Mardaddy21 May 2012 11:09 p.m. PST

Why the heartache? If it looks "about" the right size, use it.

EVERYTHING on a gaming table is after all a, "representation."

We'd all be screwed if we had to play 100% true replicas of EVERYTHING.

infojunky21 May 2012 11:23 p.m. PST

if it looks right use it…

Brother Jim21 May 2012 11:28 p.m. PST

I have 8 (or 10) of those for use with my 15mm stuff. Mine are a mix of the green and tan camo, don't have any of the grey.

This is copied from a post I made a while ago.

Another option might be the Matchbox "Real Working Rigs" M1A1 Abrams Tank. I don't have any pictures, but I intend to enclose the treads (front, rear, sides and underneath) with plasticard to make it a Grav tank.

The hull measures 87mm long, 38mm wide and 17-20mm tall.
Height to top of commander's hatch (which opens) is 31 to 32mm
Total Height to top of commander's MG is about 36mm.

Abrams hull (without turret) should have same height as 15mm figure

…which works if both are to the same scale, AND both unbased. However 15mm figures are usually cast on a 1mm base, then mounted on another 1mm base, hence the use of 1/100 scale vehicles with 15mm figures.

Now of course if your 15mm figures become 1/100 scale (18mm) they will appear to be too tall ;-)

United Alliance – LOL !

SirFjodin22 May 2012 3:03 a.m. PST

In 1/100 1meter is about 10mm, so using real Abrams measurements from here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Abrams and measurements of Matchbox tank provided by Brother Jim we can make comparison

Proper 15mm Abrams should be:
Height 20,4mm – 2,4cm (2.44 m)
Width 30,6mm – 3,6cm (3.66 m)
Hull Lenght 70.9mm – 7,9 cm (7.93 m)

Matchbox tank:
Height 17-20mm
Width 38mm
Hull Lenght 87mm

So its very close to 15mm. Is a bit bigger but close.

GeoffQRF22 May 2012 3:36 a.m. PST

I do worry slightly about people converting things to 1:100 scale…

Length Gun forward: 9.77m = 97.7mm
Hull length: 7.93m = 79.3mm
Width: 3.66m = 36.6mm
Height: 2.44m = 24.4mm

'True' 15mm is, of course, a bit smaller. The Matchbox tank scales out more like 1:90-1:96, so slightly big for 1:100 and definitely oversize for 'true' 15mm, which is closer to about 1:115.

Height is tricky, as it depends on whether they are measuring to turret top, cupola top or ultimate height (e.g. to top of mounted armaments)

Thanx GeoffQRF for corrections!

For this I'll give you a coockie :) And its painted version of miniatures from your Freikorps range

Ooh, that is really nice

Moqawama22 May 2012 5:17 a.m. PST

Can we see the UNITED ALLIANCE tank close to a Rebel Mini-Khurasan or Old Crow tank?

It seems it would be a bit short of the Siler and the Dragmataa (but only slightly) while being infinitely less bulky.

sharkbait22 May 2012 5:53 a.m. PST

The tank looks like it would be a good fit for 15mm. I'm a firm believer in "good enough" when it comes to scale matching.

Where do you guys find these in stores?!?! I was able to get two Matchbox MRAPs, but I've never seen the tanks or any of the other cool stuff. I've looked in Target, Wal-Mart, and Dollar Tree.

GeoffQRF22 May 2012 6:01 a.m. PST

Tesco (UK) had some the other day

Moqawama22 May 2012 6:12 a.m. PST

sharkbait,

living in a country with an otherwise blessed lack of megamalls (as megamalls strangle small shops into closure and provide less and worse paid working places) I usually buy the toys I see mentioned here on ebay, preferably if used and unpackaged as they come cheaper,

SirFjodin22 May 2012 6:23 a.m. PST

Tanks are recently arrived at Target in Sydney.

Brother Jim22 May 2012 7:15 a.m. PST

I bought all mine on ebay.

sharkbait22 May 2012 7:34 a.m. PST

I may have to resort to ebay. However, I do go to Target often enough, so I'll keep checking.

retzlaffmd22 May 2012 8:54 a.m. PST

For those wondering, the one in his picture IS the "Real Working Rigs" Abrams…

The Game Crafter22 May 2012 11:22 a.m. PST

Here are some pics of the matchbox abrams tank with some 15 mm figures it is a little large but I think it works fine. link link link

(Jake Collins of NZ 2)22 May 2012 1:14 p.m. PST

Given that most "15mm" sci-fi figures and vehicles are getting bigger than 15mm, I think the fact it is a bit oversize for true scale is not a problem.

deviantsaint22 May 2012 1:21 p.m. PST

Nice to know these are REALLY new. I've been haunting the
toy aisle looking for one of these. Figured I had missed it but I guess not. Makes my day!
All over Ebay for decent prices right now…..

AWuuuu22 May 2012 3:02 p.m. PST

As a side note SIKU is making cheap 1:100 Leopard 2 and sell them quite cheaply

(and probably Leopard 1 and 6x6 armored transport probably in similar scale – but I am jet to find any )

They are making it at different scales tho, 1:100 is cheapest one.

Moqawama22 May 2012 4:00 p.m. PST

SIKU 6x6 armored transport is actually more 1:87

THANX MATE!
Yes, its bigger than proper 15mm tank, but you know what… I can always use it not for 15mm modern, but for 15mm sci-fi. Lets say its not M1A1, but M1A5 tank of year 2050 :)

The Game Crafter22 May 2012 9:13 p.m. PST

The system I use Defines it simply as a Heavy tank no real official designation.
