Hey guys! I was wondering if there are any good sets for gigantic battles? 1:1 scale battalions or larger? |

Well, Flames of War actually works better with an infantry battalion per side than the reinforced company that's normally used. But moving 600+ infantrymen, even if they're based in teams of 4-5, gets tiresome. |

1:1 scale Isn't that called re-enacting? |

Is it for armour or infantry? most if not all rules extrapolate and use stands once above company level that I am aware of |

Sorry, I should have explained further. I am using stands, but I was looking for the stand to represent a fire team. Similar scale to FOW for example. |

1:1 scale battalions or larger? IIRC REFORGER was usually a good 1:1 scale wargame |

1:1 scale battalions or larger? IIRC REFORGER was usually a good 1:1 scale wargame or RIMPAC for an even more modern example |

Addressing the OP more directly
Back in the day when we did big WRG Moderns (1950 – 1985) battles the target was to get about one player per battalion, but the games always ended up with too much frontage as no-one wanted to be in the second echelon (not that we knew about the second echelon then ) Cheers David |

Flames of War will work, and you can find Modern Flames of War on the web. But you're really trying to play a couple levels too high, in terms of what the real commander would be aware of. A battalion commander would give orders to his companies and would be aware of the status of platoons. Knowing how beat up the individual fireteams in a squad are is much more detail than a battalion command wants to, or needs to, pay attention to. Using Flames again, buy an extra artillery staff team for your battalion HQ (gotta have a map table!) and then field 2-3 infantry companies plus the battalion heavy weapons. Then add in the typical artillery battery and cannon platoon from Regiment,
maybe air support, if you brought the ground FAC

Do you want to be vaguly realistic or not? If so don't foget that in reality any one unit will proably only be able to actually fight for a few hours. In 8 hours most tanks will be running on empty, no ammo and down in strength from mechanical and actual battle damage. On that basis only about 1/3 will be fighting at any one time. The rest will be moving up, movingg back, resting, or re arming/re fueling. In depth you are looking at proably 18k (long range arty to forward edge of battle. To keep a big group runnimg they need to be within a few miles of good road. We are writing currently a set of simplifed rules for one or two battalion battle groups in attack. This covers only a frontage of about 500 to 1000m but requires a depth of 18km. This gives 1 to 2 companies in battle at any one time. Remember in real actions the frontage is normally only about 3000m you want to break through and exploit not assult across 100000m of front. Many 1 unit = 1 platoon or company use massively unrealistic terrain and ludicrous frontages. Great for a game but pure fantasy |
