As my new Vietnam project progresses, I have a question for my TMP Modernist friends. I'm more used to Napoleonics and ACW where basing figures is an obvious necessity. However, it occurs to me that with vehicles, be it WWII, Vietnam, Iraq, or whatever, the ratio is more likely to be 1:1 (or thereabouts) for how many real vehicles each model represents. That being the likely case, do you attach your vehicles to any sort of a scenic base? If so, what's the rational for doing so? |

No, except for the very small – jeeps, motorcycles, etc., adn then I put them on the smallest possible bases – 1/2" square metal. |

I think basing the very small ones seems quite reasonable, if only to help avoid misplacing them amidst all the terrain features on a large board. |

I base my vehicles in all scales. They look better, match the infantry around them and it gives a defined footprint for the area they occupy and a sensible point from which to measure ranges, movement etc. |

I base mine too all the way up to 15mm simply because it reduces damage to the model. I used to cringe every time someone would pick up two (or three!) at a time by squeezing them together. Now, they must pick them up by the base and it's one at a time. No damage. |

I glue magnets to the bottom of mine so they can go without a base or be attached to whatever base the rules call for. |

I base mine on metal. I agree with the idea of it having some area that it occupies but it is also much easier to transport them on magnetic sheets. |

I base, otherwise they look shrunken next to based figures beside them. It also protects the paint job and any delicate parts when you pick them up. (By the base of course). |

My modern 1/300 stuff is for NATO Brigade Commander link so yes, I base 'em. |

Yep, FOW small bases for everything including infantry, gives a standard look, gives something to pick up with, stops them knocking together in storage trays. |

My N-Scale tanks are all based on metal. Allows them to stick to the magnets in their toolbox and also lets me paint what the tank type on the bottom so I can' remember which variant they are. :) |

No
only small cannons and such

I base everything. I'd base my kids if they sat still long enough. |

I didn't use to, but am going to in the future, to help avoid things being scratched up |

What Sundance said. Only for the smallest stuff. |

Yep, absolutely all of them on 20mm x 40mm bases. Protects the mini and barrel and really finishes off each tank. Allows me to add unit markings to the rear of the base too. I've also scrawled the product code and manufacturer on the underside for when I want to buy more that match. |
