I'm thinking of getting into the modern area and have been looking at the 1/600 from pico armor. I like the price compared to the GHQ and c in c 6mm products but am a little concerned about the size of them. Those of you that have used them what did you think of them?

Absolutely love them. I like that in 1 base = 1 [latoon type games, my bases have a platoon of vehicles on them.

They paint up well and the detail is amazing.

I love them as well. If I hadn't started in 6mm for some projects, I'd probably do all my WWII and moderns in 3mm. As it is, I use it for higher level games (i.e. Cold War Commander) for the main periods, but also at company scale for Vietnam and now the ACW.

Painting the vehicles is easy, and the infantry can be what you make them, I go for more detail in my Vietnam project than I would for a brigade-level game. They're still faster than 6mm, even with more attention to detail.

The detail as has been said is pretty amazing and they are a great deal for the price. I agree with all that has been said before grin. Robert

Desert War,

What size bases do you use for your units?

GROSSMAN21 May 2012 10:42 a.m. PST

I prefer 6mm because I am man of a certain age. Plus there is no way the 3mm detail is better than a GHQ casting- still if cost is a concern 3mm might be your huckleberry.

Kaoschallenged21 May 2012 11:05 a.m. PST

To each his own GROSSMAN. I started out in 6mm and switched totally to 3mm-1/600 years ago. I think the detail on the 3mm-1/600 models from Oddzial Osmy (O8) miniatures are pretty amazing for their size and for being alot smaller then 6mm. They are the GHQ of 3mm-1/600. And thats coming from someone in his 50s laugh. When I can get 30 vehicles for the less then the price of one pack of 5 GHQ vehicles I am going for the 30.That was one of the reasons I got out of 6mm. Robert

I'm with Kaos and the rest of the guys. I own a load of GHQ figs. They are great. However, the 3mm stuff from Pico Armor is incredible too. You can see the detail in the side skirts for a Panzer Mk IV. I own loads of 3mm WWII and Moderns. I'd already have dumped my 6mm stuff if a good buddy of mine still didn't own some too. Oh, I'm 50 and can easily paint camo on my 3mm WWII German vehicles.

I use 30mm x 30mm for my Moderns and 40mm x 40mm for my WWII.

Thanks,

John

These are nicely done models for their scale, but it seems to me that they have an exaggerated height to them. Can you comment on this? Thanks.

Kaoschallenged21 May 2012 3:38 p.m. PST

I have never really noticed that and perhaps I guess it doesn't matter to me.There are some aspects like that in some scales for example I think I found the CinC and GHQ 6mm miniatures not really the same though supposedly the same scale. GHQ tends to have stowage and other detail to be exaggerated or out of scale while CinC has less so to very little detail. That doesn't seem to bother those who game with them even though some have commented on both. But this thread isn't to bash GHQ or CinC laugh. Robert

I have a Soviet armoured battalion circa 1984 in 3mm from O8. While I do agree that the detail of the models is great, this scale never quite captured my imagination and I also found unit identification to be a challenge on the table top.

The benefit of the scale is that you can represent a battalion on a 1:1 ratio at an affordable cost. But I have decided to move back up to 6mm, which is a scale that I just really like for mechanized combat.

If anyone is interested I'd actually like to trade my 3mm Soviet armoured battalion for other 6mm moderns, just send an email to jskargar AT gmail DOT com.

Absolutely love the 3mm stuff and will be using it for grand tactical/strategic games. Fit a bunch of these on a base and it portrays a platoon or larger formation. Check out my stuff at

Still love 285th, but for different games.

Sudwind, your stuff is EXCEPTIONAL! Heck, your ships are even excellent. Love em.

JJ, I'd probably take you up on that but I can't think what I need for my Warpac or Nato armies in 3mm. I picked up loads more last year.

Thanks,

John

As glutton for punishment I went with 2mm for modern armour.

They look fine painted up and based, but on a purely practical level I find them very fiddly to handle during the painting stage to fix/remove from their painting bases. Have big fat fingers though.

It isn't a mainstream period for me so it saves on the hassle of buying a multiplicity of T-64 types etc. however a full reinforced regiment in battle formation does look rather grand.

I put unit IDs and types on the bases.
