With all the best and worst warship questions floating around, what do you considered the most beautiful- i.e. the most visually striking pre-dreadnought warship?

I actually am asking this for a personal project and would like to know what ships the esteemed folks here rate highest?

Klebert L Hall21 May 2012 7:42 a.m. PST

I'm quite fond of some of the French extreme tunblehome designs.
-Kle.

King Edward VII class battleships for me.

evilcartoonist21 May 2012 8:02 a.m. PST

US Torpedo boat Cushing.
(Too small?)

U.S.S. Oregon.

Cushing, while gorgeous, is a might too small. I was thinking Protected Cruiser or larger.

Thanks for the suggestions.

On account of its graceful lines, I would go for the the Italian Regina Elena class.

Being from Mississippi, I'm partial to the USS Mississippi (BB-23).

Her figurehead is now on the grounds on the Mississippi state capitol building here in Jackson.

This is difficult, but much more pleasant to contemplate than those ugly ladies from the previous post.
I´ve narrowed it down to these two:
USS Iowa B-4

Or HMS Renown

Texas Jack beat me to my second choice! USS Iowa.

I'll join Klebert. I love those French Pre-Dreadnoughts

French Pre-Dreadnoughts – they are so ugly that they are cute! And roll like a doughnut.

idontbelieveit21 May 2012 9:44 a.m. PST

I've always been fond of Mikasa.

Ashurman21 May 2012 9:56 a.m. PST

Hmmm….I'm partial to the large armored cruiser Rurik…completed long after Dreadnought, but to a pre- design. Sorry, in K-town and no photo files!

HMS MAjestic is my idea of a pre-dreadnought:

That said I've also like Pobeda for years:

I really like the Georgios Averoff. She looks like what she is -- clean, well-armed, fast, and dangerous. Yes, she's an armored cruiser and not a battleship, but the thread-starter said "Protected Cruiser or larger," so she's good.

David Manley21 May 2012 11:24 a.m. PST

Mikasa for me. Classic British lines. Having walked her decks helps too :)

John the Greater21 May 2012 1:33 p.m. PST

I'm rather fond of the Austrian ships, like the SMS Hapsburg:

Cardinal Hawkwood21 May 2012 5:15 p.m. PST

HMS Triumph

very elegant, and the only pre dreadnought that a member of my family actually saw sunk..

Cardinal Hawkwood21 May 2012 6:04 p.m. PST

and I have a fondness for the very business like Mikasa

The USS Brooklyn is my favorite pre-Dreadnought Warship. Growing up as a kid, my next door neighbour's father served onboard this ship as one of the ship's divers in 1900. He was onboard the ship during the Boxer Rebellion, but did not volunteer for shore duty.

I say Great White Fleet flagship. It doesn't get any more Pre-Dreadnoughty than that

Lion in the Stars21 May 2012 11:11 p.m. PST

Oof, what a wet ride…

Any one of the French pre-dreads, though the Great White Fleet is also quite attractive.

CATenWolde22 May 2012 3:26 a.m. PST

Second vote for the Italian Regina Elena class!

Big Martin Back22 May 2012 5:03 a.m. PST

The "old" Admirals – first of the "real" pre-dreadnought line-up – no picture I'm afraid as I'm in work!

I'd like to suggest one my grandfather served on in WW1, but it looks like he spent all his active time on AMCs or one of the Rs.

Feet up now22 May 2012 5:21 a.m. PST

I second Cardinal Hawkwoods HMS Triumph .
whizzing through the many good pictures that one 'floats my boat'.

martbing23 May 2012 5:43 p.m. PST

I like the HMS Thunderchild HG Wells – war of the worlds -- jeff wayne's on you tube has a good vid

Chouan24 May 2012 4:17 a.m. PST

Have you a link?
The Russian armoured cruiser "Rurik" of 1906 is pretty good. Also HMS Powerful

Zen Ghost Fezian25 May 2012 5:45 p.m. PST

I like the Massena

picture

So ugly, it's beautiful

Here is one beautiful pre-dreadnought warship. USS Constitution.
