The pillars of smoke looked quite convincing -- were they scratch-built or can they be purchased?

They were made by the inimitable Shawn Morriss (AKA The Terrain GUy)

They are clump foliage- if you google "CLump Foliage smoke and flames"you should fine a number of tutorials!
