Interesting exploit from the career of tanker Otto Carius on the Eastern Front in 1943. 'During the fighting Carius' gunner had an amazing stroke of luck. Carius wrote, ‘My gunner, Unteroffizeier Kramer, can take credit for a deed that was probably unparalleled on the Eastern Front. That is, he succeeded in shooting down a Russian fighter with a tank cannon
Kramer, upset by the unrelenting nuisance of these guys, elevated his cannon along the approach route. I talked him in. He took a chance and pulled the trigger. On the second attempt, he hit one of the ‘bees' in its wing. The Russian crashed behind us' full article here link |

Well, not too surprising, since the 88mm is originally an AA gun. Sounds like a great shot though. |

The gun in the Tiger was not an 88mm Flak, it was a KWK, based on the breech of the 50mm PAK and a completely different barrel, even the ammo was different, as were the sights. The only thing it had in common was the size of the shot. Now tanks shooting at flying targets is nothing new, hitting them is another problem. I understand modern crews are trained to shoot at helicopters. |

Including this one, I've read about three German tankers and a couple of Russians who all claimed to have shot down a plane with their tank gun. |

Was it not Carius who also claimed he sank a Russian Torpedo Boad with his Tank Gun from on shore? It was THIS big. (Holds hands apart) Pat |
