Hi

Been looking at the WAB Epirote Army List over at Jeff Jonas's excellent Ancient Battles site.

Seen that Pyrrhus used Aitolians/Ambrakiots/Acarnanians Peltasts. Is there anywhere I can get more information on what they looked like.

I am presuming as peltasts they would be unarmoured, tunics of unbleached linens, no helmets, several javelins and either pelta or small round bronze shield.

I can see IN AMPW that Aitolians used Sakkos shield, convex and probably round, made of wicker covered in leather. I have tried googling for images of Sakkos shield but have drawn a blank.

Can anybody point me to any further specific info, preferably with page refs if you can.

I am looking to model up some peltasts for Pyrrhus using WF plastic Numidian infantry and bits from WG plastic Hoplites.

Thanks

James

Well after another couple of days searching I realised that Aitolian and Sakkos can be spelt as Aetolian and Sakos respectively. Having searched under these I did find some pictures finally.

On the plus side I have realised that I already have 6 peltast figures of unknown manufacture that come with Sakos shield. So I will do my plastic figures as Ambrakiots/Acarnanians.

Cheers

James

Probably hard to find since it isn't clearly defined as a link:

I'm not sure where AMPW says Sakos shield for Aitolians… that is a larger archaic shield. I used odd bucklers and Thracian Pelte for mine…. A&A and Foundry figures.
