By now, I'm sure you've all read Eric Riha's excellent article on artillery math in Flames of War. (If not, go read it here: link .) You'll notice he has a whole bunch of complicated charts calculating the chance of killing a single tank under an artillery template. You'll also notice those numbers are pretty small

Interesting, the last time I played I kept an entire Panther company busy with a Soviet artillery battery and a single Infantry compnay for the whole game. I think I took out 3-4 of the Panthers in the process. They came no where close to accomplishing their mission. |

Most people who fear artillery in FoW – have bad die rolls. |

Which of course contributes to tanks being able to bunch up. Note artillery, even modern artilley, has very low PK (Probabilty of a Kill). Most folks would be shocked to hear how many rounds of artillery have to be fired before you get an expected kill. At the NTC it was over 1000 per tank. Great artcile by the way! |

These percentages are still the best possible ways in FoW to kill most of the German heavy tanks and self-propelled AT vehicle in the common Allied arsenal at least midwar. For many of the most common Allied tanks the chances are exactly zero without a race to the flanks. I remember a midwar tournament game where the defender parked one elephant on each objective in the open and I had nothing that could even hurt it- T34/T70/KV/Infantry pretty stuff
Game over at setup
at least artillery gives you a chance |

That article reminds me of one of the things I disliked about AH's General magazine. Articles not about how you can use the proper tactics to help win the game but how to play the odds. Turns the game into a large math problem. |

at least artillery gives you a chance Infantry can assault and "push" them off the objective even if they cannot "kill" an Elephant. Articles not about how you can use the proper tactics to help win the game but how to play the odds. Turns the game into a large math problem. Only if you read and try to apply them! ;) I'm too impatient for that. |

Please, Please don't show Derek H this thread. Pat |

Reminds me of a synopsis of WWII combined arms fighting. Armor takes care of armor, Artillery takes care of Infantry and Infantry just tries to take care of itself. |

Don't think Derek will be reading any threads anymore. |

that's a real shame. Apart from his (deeply objectionable) FoW goading, I thought he was a useful contributor. Pat |

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. |
