Who is the best sculptor working in 15mm fantasy today? |
CPBelt | 16 May 2012 5:23 p.m. PST |
The guy who did the Demonworld figs. Hands down. Is he still around? Other than that, Bob Olley, but his is more 19mm. |

Mark Copplestone's 15mm Barbarian range is quite nice: link Khurasan has some nice offerings as well, but I don't know the sculptor: link |

Splintered Light has, I think, five or six different sculptors, and all are first rate. I think the answer would depend on criteria for "best." Is it just "what i like the most"? |

Sorry, didn't read the TODAY part. I like the Copplestone for individual personality, but they lose something in mass. |

I don't know who the sculptor was, but I loved Chariot's 15mm fantasy figures. |

I am biased but I would nominate Ben Siens: SLM ratmen, dark elves, orcs/goblins Faron Betchley: SLM undead, wood elves, and woodlanders Rodrick Campbell: SLM Dark Ages (fantasy enough I suppose) and new Sons of Horus coming out and halflings. Sandra Garrity: SLM halflings and hyena men and dark dwarves Wiff Waff: SLM gnomes and dwarves Bob Olley: I have his stuff as 20mm but a lot of it fits in with 15mm. |

Mark Copplestone by a country mile. I've just finished painting these guys and they are outstanding figures. Best 15mm sculpting I've seen, whether fantasy or historical.

Yes, Mr. Copplestone gets my vote. Excellent. But David has mentioned a few fine sculptors up there and all deserve praise. You too David. Cheers, TC. |

By the way, Josef Ochmann and Werner Klocke did most of the old Demonworld stuff so should be up there as well. I believe Tom Meier did some of the old Ral Partha Battlesystem figures as well. |

I don't think Ral Partha Battlesystem qualifies as "today," though

did some of the old Ral Partha Battlesystem figures as well. I don't recall making any 15mm fantasy. I made some very small sci-fi figures for RP and recently some sci-fi and one fantasy piece for Khurasan but it's an over-sized monster. I think that might be the only 15mm fantasy I've ever made. I've always thought 15mm, even more than most size-scales was a shame. 1/87 (20mm), or 1/144 (12mm) would have made so much more sense but whoever dreamed this up plopped it right between so neither 'N' nor 'HO' accessories fit, at least back when 15mm figures really were 15mm. It looks like coming right though '15mm' figures are now commonly over 18mm tall and since an average pre-20th century man was about 5'8" (19.8 at 1.87) '15mm' figures are just a bit short for 1/87. |

Tom, thanks for chiming in. I do agree that 20mm would have made more sense, the real problem was pricing. Most metals I have seen in 20mm, aren't much cheaper than their 25mm counterparts. Until the last decade or so, i would have said that 1/144 would not stand up to the quality of other scales. However, GW, Minifigs, Pendraken, Magister Militum and Bend Sinister have certainly changed my mind on this. And not forgetting Mr. Copplestone's fantasy figures in this scale (although quite 'heroic' in their portions) Weren't the Ral Partha 15mm Battle System figures sculpted by Sandra Garrity (at least some of the line was)? These days, I would lean towards Dave's Splintered Light lines as great sculpting. Mr. Copplestone certainly should be mentioned as well. |

Copplestone gets my vote for both 15mm and 10mm fantasy. |

T Meier says:
I don't recall making any 15mm fantasy. Hmm. I have two or three 15mm pieces from Ral Partha that turned up at my FLGS many years ago. This was when Martial Metals was still around, and the FLGS owner seemed to think these were "an experiment". They preceeded any of the Battlesystem stuff by years , but the Elf Archer looks a lot like what eventually came out for Battlesystem with the almost angelic robes. |

.seemed to think these were "an experiment I suppose it's possible. I could tell from a picture. I made some experimental HO (1/87, 20mm sole to crown)figures for Chaosium's 'Call of Cuthulu' and to try and convince RP to make HO western gunfight figures in the early 80's but as I said I've never been enthusiastic about 15mm. |

Blood Dawn from Magister Militum also is nice and the small 15mm Pendraken range. the Pendraken 10mm is my favorite really. |
