Ok, This one is for you knowledgeable navy ship modelers/gamers. Yes I was a Marine and in all honesty my knowledge is limited to Land based stuff. Here is my question, Are there any ships, gunboats out there compatible with 28mm That I could make, use for close shore support of my Marines. Knowledge and help is greatly appreciated. |

World War2 right? well I think Old Glory makes aPT-boat in 28mm and they were used for close in gun suppport. |

In the old WRG rules they suggested that a smaller scale ship (such as a destroyer at 1/700) be placed at the edge of the table to represent ships firing in support at a distance. The smaller scale helps imply the distance out the sea. |

Charles, how close and how big you want you support? i have used DD and CA in smaller scales to represent naval gunfire support groups. Remember that in 28mm ground scale will be pretty small. What kind of actions have you in mind? Arrigo |

Actually the idea of ships was for more of a visual effect and to maybe discourage the Japanese player from running down to the water line and blazing away. I know there are a number of different landing craft and in keeping with the 1/56 or 1/48 scale. Looking for something like a gunboat or light cruser, a submarine in scale might also make for an interesting scenario . |

I think there's a model company that does a 1/64 (or so ) PT boat but I haven't seen andy 1/64, 1/56, or 1/48 landing craft that could be converted into gun barges. Of course, you could always scratch-build something

Charles, if you have sufficient "water" in your table (just to not look too silly what about 1/350 fletcher Class destroyer from Tamiya? It is more than 30cm long so it would be sufficiently imposing. Arrigo |

Or you could have no mercy at all and put a 1/350 scale Iowa on the next table. Even the 5" guns would ruin a Japanese player's day! (Unfortunately, I haven't seen any large-scale models of the Narwhal or Argonaut, as used by the Marine Raiders) Though I suppose the destroyer would be more accurate. I know that several destroyers got dangerously close to the beach to provide direct 5" gunfire onto wherever the troops were shooting (less than 1000 yards, which is serious danger of running aground at Normandy!). Islands in the Pacific are much steeper, and have deep water very close to the beach (100 fathom line is about a mile from the waterfront at Waikiki) |
