Interesting! Both west and east all look pretty much by-the-book. I was interested that the western officer is wearing dark blue trousers with the light blue welt on the seam. And in the second engineer photo, the man on the extreme right is also wearing dark blue trousers. You would see more of those early in the war, but both photos are dated 1864. |

Dark blue trousers are seen throughout the War,just not on a large scale. Bob |

They were the real deal. America would be a different place with them living among us today. I say that with a spirit of admiration and respect. |

Are those top-hats or some kind of cavalry chapeau on the westerns? (Excuse my ignorance--just dipping into the ACW in the last few months and still getting my bearings.) Love the way they look. Sometimes I wish men still wore hats--other than baseball caps--today

"Are those top-hats or some kind of cavalry chapeau on the westerns?" No. "Sometimes I wish men still wore hats" Errrr
ever go down south? Men wear hats all the time. Amish wear them as well. |

"No." Not terribly illuminating. In fact, a bit patronizing, I'd say. Next time I go out to Amish country I'll look forward to wearing one then. By the way, thanks for nothing but a nice dose of snobbertude. Maybe you should start smoking a pipe like the guy in the picture >;) |

In response to axabrax's question, these Western federals (a.k.a. what we would call the 'Midwest' today) are wearing the model 1858 issue Dress Hat (known as a Hardee or Jeff Davis hat informally) – modified to fit their own personal tastes. You also see Westerners wearing a variety of civilian style brim hats and a smattering of forage caps.
For some reason, the Dress (Hardee) Hat was never popular in the Army of the Potomac, outside of the 'Western' (a.k.a. "Iron") Brigade of the I Corps. The Easterners preferred the forage cap, or, as you can see from these 1864 photos, simply wore a civilian hat if they were permitted. Anyone with more authoritative information on this subject, please share with the rest of us. |

The guy with the mile long pipe looks like Lee Van Cleef. Any of you folks seen yourselves in these old pics? I haven't seen me. Yet. |
