So, not a burial site. Not a single stone – a ring or henge work or other similar site.

I'm going to guess that Stonehenge will win – but it's not my favourite – all the magic and wonder is rapidly dispelled by the A303.

I'm going to go with Avebury, but Merrivale comes a close second.

Avebury is the big one surrounding the small village? I thought that one was pretty cool! The Rude Man isn't stone, but is impressive too.

Avebury because it's the only stone circle with a pub within the circle.

There's one I call Dallas henge on Interstate 20 between Dallas and Fort Worth!

Otherwise Car henge.

Battle Phlox13 May 2012 8:12 p.m. PST

Machu Pichu. OK not really a stone circle but it is really cool.

Cerdic13 May 2012 11:13 p.m. PST

Rude Man? I'm guessing that is the Cerne Abbas Giant.

The I looked him up on Wikipedia. Never heard him referred to as the Rude Man before though. Is that an American thing?

Arbor low is cool.

I made my family take me there when I was 11.

It rained.

I loved it.

Oddly I've never heard of it, but have just discovered there's an occasional bus from Sheffield to that neighbourhood. One for the summer :-)

Cerne Abbas is indeed the Rude Man. I first heard it called that at a nearby tourist information house. I've seen it called that on TV also. Not sure if it originated in USA.

The Ring of Brodgar on Orkney is one of my very favorite circles, standing on in dramatic setting. Also a heavy nod toward Avebury. I think of Stonehenge as part of a whole sacred area that includes the many sites including Avebury. I was not able to negotiate public transport to get out to Carnac. Maybe someday!

Tanuki14 May 2012 9:27 a.m. PST

Another vote for the Ring of Brodgar – visited on a magical, bright summer's day.

Spoiled shortly thereafter by the arrival of a coachload of tourists. Special kudos to the guy who photographed every one of 88(?) stones individually. Twice.

By the time we visited Maes How later in the afternoon, thy were just leaving, and the Historic Scotland warden was in shock – their tour guide had insisted on squeezing 50 people together into the chamber.

Callanish and Castlerigg too.

It wasn't me, but it quite easily could have been.

On behalf of all sad rock photographers – sorry.
