If you saw two rulesets of the same genre and one was had the "TMP seal of approval" would you buy that one over the other?

MajorB13 May 2012 10:32 a.m. PST

Not necessarily.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian13 May 2012 10:33 a.m. PST

As in "Approved by a random selection of people who argue incessantly on the internet"?

Pictors Studio13 May 2012 10:35 a.m. PST

Without question. Who wouldn't do such a thing. If there were such a seal it would become my only yardstick for measuring rules worthiness.

skippy000113 May 2012 10:39 a.m. PST

For Napoleonic rules you'd need a BIG Stamper.

I would consider buying them. This place has me looking at a lot of rules I wouldn't have considered.

John the OFM13 May 2012 10:41 a.m. PST

Good Heavens, NO!

I don't respect ANYBODY's opinons on TMP, including my own!

Broadsword13 May 2012 10:43 a.m. PST
Scorpio13 May 2012 10:46 a.m. PST

It would in no way affect my opinion.

But I would heartily support poll threads to discuss what rules *would* get such a seal, just so I can watch the world burn.

As I have bought one set because it won a pole as best in that genera and been extremely pleased with it, I would say yes.

vtsaogames13 May 2012 11:00 a.m. PST

If it came to actually stand for something after a few years. I don't like to beta test products when I buy. You end up doing that with some rules anyway.

Dynaman878913 May 2012 11:00 a.m. PST

No

Dr Feelgood13 May 2012 11:02 a.m. PST

I'd run a million miles from such a 'seal of approval'

Privateer4hire13 May 2012 11:11 a.m. PST

FoW would doubtless become the first rule set to gain such approval, no?

I'll get me coat. : )

toofatlardies13 May 2012 11:21 a.m. PST

Interestingly we have won the best historical rules poll that happens on TMP twice in the last three years that the competition has been running with Sharp Practice and Charlie Don't Surf and came second on the other year with Mud & Blood. What I can tell you is that this does generate an immediate and not insignificant spike in sales of that rule set. So clearly quite a lot of people do value the opinions of others on TMP.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER13 May 2012 11:22 a.m. PST

Maybe.

53Punisher13 May 2012 11:36 a.m. PST

You should be banished to the Dawghouse for even bringing up such a suggestion! :)

Mapleleaf13 May 2012 11:39 a.m. PST

No Rules are a personal choice

freewargamesrules13 May 2012 11:42 a.m. PST

No one here can agree on a ruleset for a given period so can't see it happening

doc mcb13 May 2012 11:42 a.m. PST

Mexican Jack has it.

Personal logo McKinstry Supporting Member of TMP Fezian13 May 2012 12:03 p.m. PST

Isn't that a bit like allowing a mob to determine guilt or innocence?

Aires de Saldanha13 May 2012 12:52 p.m. PST

No.

would there be a TMP discount?
It would cause me to consider it more specifically. But rules choices have more to do with whom I expect to play. Like, against my best judgement, I now own a set of 40k rules and an army, cause it is a system for which I can readily find opponents.

Garryowen Supporting Member of TMP13 May 2012 1:55 p.m. PST

It would make no difference, so I guess the answer is NO.

Tom

Lentulus13 May 2012 2:01 p.m. PST

No, any rules set with enough agreement among us lot to win a seal of approval would have used up all its luck, and there would be none left for the players.

Grand Duke Natokina13 May 2012 2:11 p.m. PST

Pictors, how could you type that with a straight face?

Norman D Landings13 May 2012 2:50 p.m. PST

I feel uneasy and troubled whenever I buy anything that doesn't come with a TMP seal of approval.

Having such a guarantee of quality would enable me to relax and make worry-free purchases.

Yesthatphil13 May 2012 4:12 p.m. PST

I doubt it would make a positive impression …

Only if they had the rules had their own board.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP13 May 2012 4:33 p.m. PST

Only if it was any good – not because TMP approved it !

WeeSparky13 May 2012 4:36 p.m. PST

Only if it included a "score". A 3/5 or 7/10 rating would mean more to me than a simple stamp of approval. I check the ratings and reviews online before I buy boardgames (usually). I also find typical play times and numbers of players information more important than historical accuracy.

I'm interested in TMPers' oppions (at least some of the time anyway) so maybe…

kreoseus214 May 2012 2:47 a.m. PST

Good luck getting all the members to agree. On anything !

Oddball14 May 2012 5:42 a.m. PST

I bought "British Grenadier" based upon comments from TMP members. Never played it before I purchased it. I'm very glad I did, fine set of rules.

DocMagus14 May 2012 7:20 a.m. PST

I much preffer seeing general reviews and comments on what people like and dislike about a game.

Would like to see a maintained list of rule sets with the above added. Something like IMDB does with movies. Might help reduce the questions on "I'm just getting started in *blank* and what rules should I use? " Members could read up a little before asking a question.

richarDISNEY14 May 2012 9:15 a.m. PST

Nope.
Too many opinions here.
I would rather post the question and trust the posters that I have most in common with.

Willtij14 May 2012 9:26 a.m. PST

I think, at the very least, it would cause me to research it a bit more to look into why it got such approval.

Lentulus14 May 2012 10:17 a.m. PST

People who are fond of either sausages or seals of approval should not see how either is made.

I would, but only if they were advancing with leveled muskets.

They would be the most picky / round about set of rules with contradictions every other paragraph…

So of course I would buy them for the local rules lawyers – they could spend weeks getting through the first page and out of the clubs hair grin
