Anyone know where I can purchase decals for use on Horsa gliders?

Fed up with painting invasion strips by hand so looking for some waterslide decals.

Are you around Dom?

Not come across anything sorry – stripe decals tend to be more trouble than they're worth, as usually they're going on a tapered surface, so either they're carefully designed for an exact fit on a specific model, or they're not and therefore they *will* go wonky and not join up properly, as well as appearing askew on the aircraft sides, since a straight decal on a tapered surface, is going to end up "leaning" aft lower on the fuselage….

[Edit] Easier to show than explain properly:

The fuselage bands on this sheet are tailored to fit a Wings Of War Albatros – you can see they're quite obviously curved, but when applied to the model, the stripes are neat and vertical around the fuselage:

If the decal was straight (or indeed curved, but not specifically to fit that model) it would end up looking wonky when applied.

Cheers Dom your a saint.

Sage advice as always.

Thanks Mike G, I'll probably get the roundels from I-94.

Damn, didn't even know you did them; good to see the curvature on the fuselage ones. [Stops and looks puzzled.] Umm, do you make a Horsa then…?

GeoffQRF14 May 2012 6:40 a.m. PST

Nope.

Those are actually 'fighter sized' (the bands were different width for fighters and bombers, according to Aircraft of the Fighting Powers, 1944).

They were originally produced for a semi-special order (special order, but we decided we would do them anyway, as no-one else seemed to have any).

They have sold out twice now.

P.S. It seems that AIM make a Horsa…

Yeah, there are a couple out there, one reason decals are problematic – fit them perfectly for one make, and they're bound to not quite fit on another….
