. Sorry, you didn't specify a particular time period. Seems there are several versions. That is often the way in the folk song tradition where lyrics are passed on orally. How about this one: link With words like "thee" in it, it is more likely to be 19th century

There's an ACW reenactment unit that uses the song as their march. Don't recall exactly, the name of the outfit. Could be the 19th or 13th Virginia. I heard them sing that after the Saturday battle scenario as they marched back to their camp, at Sharon Woods Heritage Village last year in Sharonville,OH. |

Actualy, horse-drawn streetcars were in use from the 1830's onward. Dave |

One more verse: If you'll come and be my own, Little Liza Jane, We'll eat ham and sweet corn pone, Little Liza Jane. That's all I've got. |

Margard and StoneMtnMinis are each correct. Baltimore and other cities had horse-drawn street cars, although one version of the lyrics has : 'Got a house in Baltimore lots of children 'round the door'. If you Google 'Little Liza Jane' you'll get a number of hits for lyrics. |

A tune still in the repetoire of New Orleans jazz and brass band groups. |

I have a wicked (as in great, not bawdy) version on a blues/jazz compilation CD, I think the version of Little Liza Jane dates back about a century or so. Some of the recordings on the CD were from cylinders, others were 78s. |
