This is probably been asked before, but what do you view your role in you local gaming group.

A)Are you a mover and shaker. Do you talk your friends into new periods, then run off to build most of the armies and terrain. Design the rules or scenarios and run a majority of the games.
B)Go with the flow, paint armies and join in whatever period everyone else likes. Occasionally run a game.
C)The player! Shows up for every game and plays his heart out. Though not much for painting or running the games.
D)The period player. Has figs and rules for his favorite period but rarely participates in other games.

Of course feel free to add a new 'role'

David Manley08 May 2012 9:38 p.m. PST

F) Mug who does everything for everyone else, putting in all the effort to keep things going whilst others ride on their coat tails

Cerberus031108 May 2012 9:38 p.m. PST

G) The one they all laugh about because of my rotten, toxic, disastrous luck.

darthfozzywig08 May 2012 9:44 p.m. PST

F.

Jovian108 May 2012 10:07 p.m. PST

H) The one who HAS most periods, assembled, painted, and ready to play, who suggests new games, scenarios, and fun, only to be beaten about the head and shoulders that Games Workshop is the only REAL hobby, whence I meekly get out my Space Marines and trounce them for their lack of vision.

Fat Wally08 May 2012 11:40 p.m. PST

Mostly A) though occasionally D)

Sparker09 May 2012 12:02 a.m. PST

Hmm. I think I can honestly claim to have built up a ground swell for Napoleonics at my FLGS, but I have been supported by a couple of fellow hard core Napoleonistas in this. (I certainly can't claim to have built any terrain…)

But I'll gladly join in any historical game going.

Definitely a follower rather than a leader when it comes to FOW, happy to be swayed by the enthusiasm of the young 'uns…

I hope I have been polite, interested yet non committal with the non historical stuff..

streetline09 May 2012 1:52 a.m. PST

I'm the short bald gobby one. Stands out from the more…. generously proportioned…. lads.

I) Non-attender

Martin Rapier09 May 2012 3:15 a.m. PST

A mixture of A and B.

Dynaman878909 May 2012 3:37 a.m. PST

mix of A and B as well. We have a lot of A types at my group though – so hard to stand out…

Given up for good09 May 2012 3:47 a.m. PST

The quiet one in the corner on by himself mumbling strange incantations over rule books and odd shaped dice.

Oh sorry – that's not me at all, honestly, just someone I once knew…

Well OK – I did get thrown out of the club for wanting to play D&D many years ago!

Khusrau09 May 2012 5:05 a.m. PST

mix of A & B. I have the money, but not the time to do new periods and rules, so I am usually an early adopter. Then a late painter and getting troops on the table, as I have enough money to buy everything, but not enough time to get it all painted.

Gennorm09 May 2012 5:08 a.m. PST

A – pushing historical Lardy and Warlordy type stuff in the face of club leagues and earnest tournament preparation. Also a bit of D.

D

Pictors Studio09 May 2012 5:43 a.m. PST

I paint all the figs, design all the scenarios, make all the terrain, set up all the times to play and make all the calls. I also usually provide food and drink. Other than that everyone else does all the work.

Good for them! Play GURPS you fool!

Tom Reed09 May 2012 6:18 a.m. PST

Right now I am the coordinator. I arrange for someone to run a game on a given game night and then make sure that the players know about it and that the guy running the game has players.

John the OFM09 May 2012 6:20 a.m. PST

We game in my basement, and I provide the figures for about a quarter of the games.

TodCreasey09 May 2012 7:11 a.m. PST

We have lots of As in the club (including me) so I tend to get involved in things the other guys do that I was going to do anyways. I am happy to make someone elses project happen as I don't want to collect everything generally.

For instance the club Dark Ages collection has Normans, Anglo Danes , Vikings, Scots and Welsh in the club and I am currently only doing Scots and will likely do Vikings at some point.

I drive the Napoleonics in the club and follow along for the Ancients, Dark Ages and WWII generally.

Which selection is "does everything but roll the dice for the players"?

richarDISNEY09 May 2012 7:27 a.m. PST

Mostly A, some F.
beer

21eRegt09 May 2012 8:09 a.m. PST

In the past an "F" but now I'm easing off a bit to an "A" with occasional "B" tendencies.

Easy mark :(

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP09 May 2012 9:37 a.m. PST

Mostly D, if you make it periods, sometimes a little A. I likes what I likes!

wrgmr109 May 2012 10:24 a.m. PST

Occasionally A, mostly B. Our group of 13 has a few A's, a lot of B's and a few C's.

The Tin Dictator09 May 2012 11:00 a.m. PST

I feel like a combination of A and F.

Lentulus09 May 2012 12:06 p.m. PST

I am the guy who really want to show up, but for some reason it never quite works out.

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP09 May 2012 12:09 p.m. PST

All of the above..guilty as charged!

Agesilaus09 May 2012 8:42 p.m. PST

A and D

Jemima Fawr10 May 2012 3:57 a.m. PST

K) Lender of books to ingrates who later deny that they have them or worse, claim that they own them.

stenicplus10 May 2012 7:37 a.m. PST

L) The organiser.

Spends the prior week sending round emails to ensure something is atleast organised so that 1)we all have a game and 2)don't have to lug too much stuff around on the off chance.

Los45610 May 2012 12:12 p.m. PST

M) Don't forget the guy that comes and plays and then bitches about every single rules set not being quite right.

Sparker10 May 2012 3:01 p.m. PST

M) Don't forget the guy that comes and plays and then bitches about every single rules set not being quite right.

Or worse, stands around looking at the game, putting everyone off, then goes away and posts on a forum about what a crap set of rules you used because they allowed x to happen – when x was a standard battlefield drill of the period…

Bohemund11 May 2012 7:37 a.m. PST

It is interesting that nobody has volunteered that they are the whiner, the guy who complains constantly and could care less about whether anyone else has fun.

I guess no group has anyone like that . . .

Omemin15 May 2012 8:53 a.m. PST

I'm the writer of the newsletter, scheduler, usually the GM, and player of almost any historical period (even the ones where my butt always gets kicked).

I've also been known to develop many house rules.
