Hi,

Just thought I'd ask people's opinions on the best 15mm scale late republican (Marian / Caesarean / Octavian) roman figures?

Thanks,

FMB

The period is well served. Essex are a bit plain, OG are better. My Romans are mostly Magister Militum (Chariot), though Xyston are more fashionable these days.

If staring a new project, I might well be tempted by Corvus Belli Marians, however.

QRF both old and new range are well worth a look.

Another vote for CB Marians. Some of the EIR command figures are suitable though some less than others.

I do like the QRF figures too – my Romans were done with the older range. There isn't as much variety in pose compared to CB though some may prefer that regimented look.

The personality figures from QRF are nice though the horses are dwarfed by most other ranges. I also have some of the generals by Warmodelling – they also do lictors. I'm not so keen on their legionaries though – the shields don't seem right to my mind.

No quibble with the comments so far but suggest that you hold on a while because Blue Moon are supposed to be bringing some out to provide opposition to their Gauls, which look very nice.

" the shields don't seem right to my mind."

Yeah, maybe a little small, not long enough? but lovely figures.

I am also looking forward to seeing the new ones promised from Blue Moon Manufacturing.

Hadn't realize BM was coming out with a range, I'll keep an eye out for that. Regarding Xyston, do they even do Marian era? I know they've got a partial range for the Carthaginian wars, but didn't know they had stuff for the later Republican period.

Blue Moons Marian Romans are in the line waiting to ne molded along with the gallic mounted and dismounted Command so they are very close.
Then we will get around to doing the divorcing Romans ???

Regarding Xyston, do they even do Marian era? I know they've got a partial range for the Carthaginian wars, but didn't know they had stuff for the later Republican period.

As you noted, the Xyston Romans are designed for Camillan-Polybian era armies.

On the other hand, their Cretan archers, Balearic slingers and Numidian javelinmen work quite well as support troops for Late Republican forces.

Russ – I am looking forward to seeing more of your new Blue Moon figures… the ones you have released thus far look very nice indeed!

And here I thought that you were the 'Marian' kind. wink

Cheers,
Scott

I vote for Old Glory 15. In my experience the sculptures do not look great before painting; however, they paint up exceedingly well and look awesome "en masse." I use the OG "Marian" Romans and also the Roman allies from their Punic War period. The only difference is that the allies have a little more elaboration around their helmet plumes. I also use command packs from both periods to obtain a great variety of command poses. I supplement the OG masses with selected command figures from other makers especially Corvus Belli for command and gladius-gladius wielding optios and others as well as a few command and artillery figures from Donnington and others. Caesar and his uncle would be proud!
Vale!
