When starting the AWI with 1/72 plastics/20mm metals I knew I set myself a challenge. Unavoidably I have to reach for figures that are actually meant for other periods. So I ask you, did I get away with it?

picture

British Legion (relatively easy. Who knows what they really looked like?)

picture

British Light Infantry (Later War)

picture

British officers and Early Light Infantrymen

Info on the whereabouts of these figures and morepics are to be found at my blog, btw. pijlieblog.blogspot.com

Your interpretation of British Legion infantry is as valid as mine, I guess.
I use the pimp hat dudes in green coats, but do not use a flag. I think the infantry would have used the uncocked hat instead of the cavalry helmet, but that's just my interpretation. I suppose I could have used the Perry Lee's Legion, but I already had the pimp hat dudes painted before the Lee's Legion figures came out. grin
IF the BL infantry would carry colours, you hit the nail on the head with the proper flag for black facings.

I believe that the British horses of the period should have cropped tails. Other than that, look fine to me.

"IF the BL infantry would carry colours, you hit the nail on the head with the proper flag for black facings."

Wh, Wh, What?

Now all of my Continentals will be issued "PISS ON THE BRITISH" colours!!!

John the OFM07 May 2012 9:57 a.m. PST

Don't go there… grin

11th ACR07 May 2012 10:15 a.m. PST

IM THERE!!!!!

John the OFM07 May 2012 10:34 a.m. PST

Well, if you WANT me to be picky, the Roman Numerals in the crest don't exactly say "British Legion, 5th American", and it SHOULD be on a shield… grin

Simce the OP says hehad to make do, I am fine with them.

BTW, what infantry figures did you use? What infantry had Tarleton helmets?

11th ACR07 May 2012 11:18 a.m. PST

He may have used these, link John.

He'll have a hard time fitting the sepoys into the AWI, though. grin
Wrong kind of Indians.

Pijlie07 May 2012 11:33 a.m. PST

I used the Strelets British Light Infantry from the Egyptian campaign link

I considered the GerMan set suggested by 11th ACR, especially since I also play Colonial in 1/72, but the set is hideously expensive and is made of a soft, foamlike plastic that is rumoured to be completely unpaintable and tears easily.

Well, if you WANT me to be picky, the Roman Numerals in the crest don't exactly say "British Legion, 5th American", and it SHOULD be on a shield…

Must be because I used a Warflag flag…. ;o) originally the Colours of the 64th Foot.

I am hopeless that way. I even have at least one militia unit with that Bleeped text flag. Irresistable!

Damn! How come you can write the P-word and I canīt? Itīs because I used the Warflag, isnīt it?

I have there Tyrolean's link
The figures are very brittle and a bit steep in price.
They are premiered but still not painted. Some day.

John the OFM07 May 2012 11:49 a.m. PST

There are ways around the Bleep-o-matic… grin
Capital letters are one way.

11th ACR07 May 2012 11:58 a.m. PST

I was not trying to by-pass the Bleep-o-matic.

Doc Ord08 May 2012 8:30 a.m. PST

I think they look fine. I painted my BL infantry with short, red coats with black facings and pimp hats (Front Rank figures). I used the same color but painted in "British Legion " in the center.

Doc Ord

The curse of the Barron map evidence perchance LOL?

Pijlie, Doc O

Your money, your figures, your choice! I would go a different way based on my interpretation of the 'evidence' but hey life is too short. I am always amazed at the ingenuity of those who use the 1/72 plastic figures both in terms of convertions and paint jobs. Have you seen the greens of the AWI figures HAT are working on?

There are several threads on the message board showing both British and Continentals.

Pijlie10 May 2012 11:34 p.m. PST

Yep. I am eagerly awaiting those and the other SYW figures. Theyīre not coming out quick enough to my (impatient) tastes though :o)

Ugh! BAD reenactors in made up uniforms!

There is ZERO proof that uniform was ever worn. The caps are completely made up. I never saw a reference to them ANYWHERE.
In 1783 they wore green faced black. Cocked hats i believe from what Lefferts has in his book.

My BL are in short green jackets with the so called "pimp-hat".

All these guys need propellers on the top of there caps.

PS, My BL are in short green jackets with Tricorns.

GNREP815 May 2012 10:12 a.m. PST

They do look a bit down!

though i think we have to give respect to them for the joy they have bought the English speaking world by having a business called GerMan/BUM (i'm aware that in Spanish its not funny!)
It is odd though why they make models from a plastic that can be almost pulled apart
