Can anyone comment on the quality of the old glory vs. gripping beast sassanids (specifically the cavalry and elephants)? The old glory stuff is less expensive but the website photos are blurry.

I saw a painted Old Glory Sassanid army in a comp at Historicon a few years ago and it was splendid! For my own Sassanid army I went with A&A and love it.

IMHO I would go with Old Glory!! The price can not be beaten and you get decent figures too!!! Mike Adams

I much prefer Gripping Beast's Sassanid line. The OG elephant looks a bit odd to me, GB's is better (though I think the best I've seen is by Aventine).

Some shots of my Sassanids (for WAB) can be seen here:

I would do Gripping Beast

Gripping Beast anytime.
Their heavy Sassanid cavalry is superb and, as all GB figures, paint up remarkably easy.

Something odd about Gripping Beast figures in general. When you see them 'in the raw' you often get an impression of rather unsubtle figures. It's only after you've primed them that the very fine details start coming out.

Go with The Beast and you'll never be sorry.

i don't know about the Sassanids line, but i mix the two company's gauls with no problems. Most of my units are made up of a front rank of gripping beast, and old glory filling our the unit.

Does gripping beast have any U.S. distributors besides Architects of War? AoW doesnt carry the sassanid stuff on their website.

I really like OG figures. I do not have Sassanids from either range but do have Dark Age types from both.

Their (OG) mounted are on the small side and don't mix well, in my limited experience, but their range makes up for this. I mix their foot with other manufacturers' without a problem, though if you want your troops looking really regular then that may be a problem.

Have you looked at Newline Designs/Miniatures? I got some of their Goths and Franks at Crusade this year.Good value – better than OG even for horse, and though slim, middling height between OG and GB.

I have begun collecting ebay Sassanids so I have a strange mixed bunch of heavy mounted but intend to complete the army with Newline instead of OG because I won't need 30 Daylami, nor 10 LH: Newline packs are smaller, though bulk discount is fair.

chrach7:

AoW should be able to bring in whatever it is you need, you just have to drop them a line/email.
