Writing in Slingshot magazine, Steven Neate remarks…

I've been cutting down my participation to playing just one day of the weekend to, let's say, minimise domestic tensions, and to make the one day's gaming a more intensely enjoyable day out.

Are multi-day conventions "too much" for you?

* I prefer just one day at a wargame show or convention
* I prefer to game all weekend

DeanMoto02 May 2012 2:59 p.m. PST

6 of one…

If you were to go to a multi-day convention, say like Enfilade! nhmgs.org/enfilade.html this coming Memorial Day weekend (shameless plug) – and then restrict gaming for family time the rest of the month, why not?

In my case it is not worth the travel time to go other than for the full deal. I get 1-2 chances a year to go to a con

Dynaman878902 May 2012 3:48 p.m. PST

First off, if the "better" half has an objection to your going to a convention for a couple days once a twice a year then you have serious relationship problems…

I prefer to go to mult day conventions now. The more important consideration is cost rather then time.

klepley02 May 2012 4:32 p.m. PST

Why take your wife/husband to a convention unless she/he games? I enjoy three to four days of intense gaming!!!

I can do 'one day' at the FLGS. Multi-day for me…

Wife games. No problem.

The travel distance stateside is too long for most of us to do one day cons.

multi day cons usually…..

Definitely an Atlantic divide question.

Mick A02 May 2012 10:56 p.m. PST

Multi day if I'm running something as I can use the second day to look round the show properly, single day if I'm not running something.

Hey Bill, you seem to be putting up a lot of polls, shouldn't all these posts be in that section?

Muilti day for us. I like the feeling of getting away for the weekend and knowing its for gaming.

epturner03 May 2012 4:06 a.m. PST

Depends. Work, family, work, other hobbies, work… all seem to have a vote.

Brent2751103 May 2012 6:45 a.m. PST

I like the whole weekend. My wife is a big girl and can either have fun at the con or do whatever chicks do. We view it as sort of a mini vacation, pun intended.

stenicplus03 May 2012 7:06 a.m. PST

I like both.

I have a couple of weekenders a year which are effectively lads weekend away. But then it's also good to get to a 1 day event so I can get back to take the kids to rugby on Sunday etc…

jdpintex03 May 2012 7:58 a.m. PST

Multi-day for sure. If I'm traveling to a con, it makes more sense to play for several days. If the wife decides to come with, she finds her own enterainment.

I can do a one day gaming here at home and usually do so once a month.

Definitely an Atlantic divide question.

Absolutely.

US gamers go to conventions primarily to play games.
UK gamers go to shows primarily to shop.

Shopping rarely takes more than a day …

Tom Reed03 May 2012 9:38 a.m. PST

Depends on how far I have to drive whether I will go for just one day or stay for the weekend.

Willtij03 May 2012 10:49 a.m. PST

I like having once a year a multi-day and then between maybe a few single day ones to stay in the loop.

pancerni203 May 2012 1:14 p.m. PST

The longer the better…the saddest time of the multi day convention is sitting in the bar on Saturday night realizing it's just about done…

"US gamers go to conventions primarily to play games.
UK gamers go to shows primarily to shop.Shopping rarely takes more than a day"

True to a point…but isn't that dicotomy a function of the lack of participation games at UK conventions compared to US conventions? Or is the lack of participation games the result of one day conventions where the main focus is on shopping? Chicken or egg?

The longer the better. I'll be at GenCon for six days.

John Thomas803 May 2012 5:42 p.m. PST

I took the Mrs to Spring Fever. She had run of the hotel's facilities (pool, spa, etc) and I got to game to my hearts content.

Best of both worlds.

firstvarty197918 May 2012 8:24 a.m. PST

Multi-day for sure. If you live close enough to the site to "day trip" that's great if you can't get there otherwise, but a 3-day event really lets me get my gaming on!
