Do you prefer your historical air games to feature jets or propellers? |
Simcoe 2000 | 01 May 2012 5:11 p.m. PST |
Props! Preferably biplanes, thank you! |

The brother of a dear woman I knew was crew on Puff the Magic Dragon in Nam. He complained that civilian airlines looked for people with jet experience when flying props was harder. So he said. That said, the air games I've played featured biplanes and triplanes. |

Jet combat these days is about missile and radar technology. Korea is about the latest you can go for good dogfights. So props, preferably the slower the better. |

Either. The Speed of Heat and Air Superiority/Air Strike were some of my favorite games and they were all jets. Wings of War is easily my favorite convention air game. I used to like Mustangs and Messershmits but now I'd rather play something a little less reliant on finicky stands. Scott Fisher's Check Your Six is one of the best games out there. Highly playtested, covers both props and jets, loads of scenario books. Its a total win. |
Joep123 | 01 May 2012 7:02 p.m. PST |
Props, but slowly moving into Jets with my recent purchase of CY6- Jet Age. |
taskforce58 | 01 May 2012 7:02 p.m. PST |
I like all of them, from Fokker Eindeckers to F-22 Raptors. (Not in the same game, of course) |
skippy0001 | 01 May 2012 7:18 p.m. PST |
Vril!!!
but I'll settle for props and up to '50's jets. |

Props, W.W. I and II, mostly W.W. II. Although I do like jet games also. |

Best of both worlds: B-36s filling the skies raining death on the puny B-52s . . . oops, got carried away, I'm better now. Seriously, jets. |

Props to early jets. Once you get to BVR missile duels, well, that seems to take the fun out of it! |
Allen57 | 02 May 2012 4:21 a.m. PST |
WWI to Vietnam. BVR missiles and the speed after that do take the fun out of it. |

Definitely jets, especially 60's to early '80's, before BVR really worked and seems subsequently to have become the dominating factor in air war. |

King Cobra | 02 May 2012 7:34 p.m. PST |
Piston powered airscrews for me! Robert, love the Komet. Technically speaking though, it does have a have a tiny prop at its front end. KC |
Lion in the Stars | 02 May 2012 8:05 p.m. PST |
@King Cobra: that's a ram air turbine, powering the generator, not a propulsion airscrew. |

Looks like you were the only one to catch that too King Cobra . Robert

Propellors, for minis, board and computer games (and real life! although my flying experience is limited). |
Lion in the Stars | 03 May 2012 6:06 a.m. PST |
@King Cobra: sorry, seems my joke/sarcasm detector needs to be re-calibrated
[embarrassed]! Oh, let's not forget some of the other answers to 'both': McDonnell XP-67B, Ryan FR Fireball (and the later F2R Dark Shark), B36, Convair XP81, Caproni Ca.183bis, Curtis XF15C, P2V Neptune
|

I perfer wings for my air games. If it flys, I will play. Phil |
hurrahbro | 03 May 2012 12:56 p.m. PST |
I like the so called silver age of both. For props, that is the 1930's, where biplanes dominated but monoplanes were about but not yet mature. The classic pulp era! For Jets, that period just after the 2nd world war to the early 1960's, where there was not one 'fighter jet' form everyone followed (Compare say, the de Havilland Vampire with the F9F Panther with the Mig 15/Sabre) and gave us such beautiful monsters like the English Electric Lightning! The classic atomic era if you will! |
BlackWidowPilot | 03 May 2012 12:59 p.m. PST |
Props. Especially if French in origin flying for the Spanish Republic:
Or flying for China:
The stranger the better, I say

"The brother of a dear woman I knew was crew on Puff the Magic Dragon in Nam. He complained that civilian airlines looked for people with jet experience when flying props was harder. So he said." -posted by vtsoagames That is true. Airlines want jet experience and props are harder to fly. I've flown both props and jets professionally. Also, airlines really want "Pilot-in-Command" experience on multi-engine aircraft. |
138SquadronRAF | 04 May 2012 8:16 p.m. PST |
Props, preferably on steampunk airships. |
Grand Duke Natokina | 05 May 2012 5:03 p.m. PST |
I can live with either. Since our air rules use notional planes--cuts down on the expense and storage space needed--for WWII it is props. Altho I have done Nam with both. Really love the Flying Dump Truck, Skyraider. |
Dasher | 07 Jun 2012 2:35 p.m. PST |
Props, WW I up to and including the Battle of Britain. Beyond that, my interest wanes as speed technology increases in importance. |
Bashytubits | 07 Jun 2012 3:54 p.m. PST |
Props, but jets are fun too. |
