I have two sets of photos showing 15 mm 1859 Austrians posted up on the Age of Eagles Public Facebook page. This means that you can read, peruse the photos, etc, without having to register for Facebook (you can ignore the advert at the top joyfully inviting you to do so). Obviously if you are a Facebooker (vice those speedbumps on the road to progress who are not :), we would appreciate you LIKE us, but totally not required.

Anyway, here is the URL, so enjoy –

I like how those figs are painted. Great colors. Now if I could only force myself to do something similar ! I have a lot of trouble not trying to get as much of the black primer covered as possible. BTW, I think that's a great quote.

Colonel Bill30 Apr 2012 5:31 p.m. PST

That is probably the most difficult part of the way I paint, according to those I've taught the technique to. It simply looks like you are not painting enough on the figure, not covering enough of the primer.

But if you can get past that issue, it seems to work well and is fast.

Yes, I remember reading the same in your article which convinced me to start priming in black :) I've found that with certain figures it is easier to foloow that than with others. Either way priming 15mm's with black is MUCH BETTER. Thanks for the tips !

These look very good.

Just been doing the same with my 15mm forces for the 1859-1871 periods, which has included Austrians. I actually found the Austrians the easiest to paint over black! exmouthwargames.blogspot.co.uk They are somewhere in this blog.

Which range of figures didmyounuse Bill? Mine are. Real polyglot of MiniFigs, Irregular, QRF, Lancashire and conversions … I committed many sins here which I won't go into. The epaulette and button purists will shrivel and die if I said what I have done in public.

Any Billy Yank in the SW of UK this weekend, 5th May, is welcome to Legionary 2012 to come and see some war gaming loveliness. legionaryshow.co.uk

Excuse my ignorance, but is AOV out soon?

Colonel Bill02 May 2012 6:53 a.m. PST

The Austrians are nearly all Rank & File, figures I purchased from the late Mark Hayes estate to help his family. The only exception is the artillery which is Old Glory. Same thing for the French I am about to paint, but I also have some Minifig Franco-Prussian figs as well.

I have committed some of the same sins as well, but I'm not one iota ashamed at all. Some troops they don't make figures for, and if anyone thinks I am going to paint up two completely separate French armies to account for the differences in uniform between 1859 and 1870, they're nuts. Heck I know someone who uses early WWI French for FPW, and they look fine.

Oh BTW, AOV (the 19th Century expansion to Age of Eagles, or Napoloenic Fire & Fury) is still a bit down the road. However, I will be publishing the complete AOV Solferino test scenario for free download soon on the Website.

Hi Bill

Is there any chance of a Draft AoV playsheet with the Solferino scenario [or a note on mods wrt AOE]

I would like to get my group looking towards AoV as we have large numbers of Nap forces and it would be good to start looking to the future [Austro Prussian and Franco Prussian.

We can always test play and report etc

Thanks

I did Solferino for Volley and Bayonet once … that was a big game. Needed the snooker table at the Officers Mess at the Commando Training Centre. Would love to see the AoV Solferino version. Also glad that your French Army has the same 1859-71 theme as mine … i.e. one Army fits all.

Haven't gone down the WW1 route for figures though … yet

Colonel Bill02 May 2012 12:35 p.m. PST

The scenario comes with a complete set of charts and the scenario special rules, so you should be able to play it, especially if you own AOE.

Hi Bill

Brilliant and all of us have AoE so it should be good.

This is our current most used set as used for over 50% of our games [all our Nap]

Also my players have asked if the AoV basing [figs/base and base sizes] will be the same as AoE or like ACW or something new.

Thanks

Colonel Bill03 May 2012 1:25 p.m. PST

Should have the file uploaded in a day or two. There will be no change in basing, tho I will provide an optional scheme for infantry given the more fluid deployment practices during this era.

Hi Bill

Thanks for confirming that the basing will be AoE.

The optional "Fluid deployment" basing sounds interesting.
