Seeking info on 15mm Soviet Motor Rifle Regiments from the 1980s in Ushankas.

Is there any available? Or are any planned?

My main period is Horn of Africa 1977 to the current day (Ethiopians, Somalis, Kenyians, Eritians & some western Interventions.)
But I am looking at doing Cold weather Cold War gone Hot games.
thanks

Can't think of any, but if you don't mind doing head swaps, the more "Russian" figures from Peter Pig's AK47 range (especially packs 62-65, and 70), plus the Ushanka separate heads from Range 6, should get you there.

You don't need Ushankas for the Horn of Africa. Its warm enough already… :o)
15mm '80 Soviets is one project I also need personally and hence will be commissioned quite soon.
Please contact me at sztab@polebitwy.pl so we can discuss possible pack / miniatures variants.

Thanks !

You missed the 'but', Pole Bitwy PL …

The OP aksed for figures 'in Ushankas' so preumably that _is what he wants.

I would add that the Ushanka heads are quite big (unless Martin has redone them) and the match with AK packs won't suit everyone I think. One to 'try it and see'.

I think you wil find in any sort of serious Cold War with artillery, MLRS and mortars flying around that helmets would get plonked on top of the Ushankas ASAP.

Thank you Dom. As an aside, your decals are ecxellent. thank you.
Thank you also Piotr and Martin. I am looking for something quite different to the orn of Africa hence Soviets in cold gear, but am still able to use to vehicles.

There is a Ron Volstead illustration on the cover of the Osprey Elite No12 Inside the Soviet Army Today of a Rifleman in Greatcoat with a tin hat atop his Ushanka. He would be fantastic.
I was thinking of some artic/winter senarios where they would be sentries/guards/garrison of installations/ stations/bases. As backup to VDV troops.
Maybe as Opfors in Stripes/Spies like us type senarios too.

deflatermouse: Do you think a sprue of alternate heads would be OK ? Or possibly several sprues ?

deflatermouse02 May 2012 3:47 a.m. PST

yes very possible. It's the fur collars and greatcoats I really think shouts the type.

I was thinking I could paint them Khaki for Soviets.
Paint them OD green for PLA Chinese.

Their figures are good, but not cold weather. My 1st choice would be for greatcoats but more than I'd dare hope for.
I really would prefer cold weather padded jackets with fur collars or greatcoats for 1970's/80's Chinese border, Arctic circle, winter in Afghanistan and even the sterotyped movie depictions of Communist troops.

I recently did some US in winter jackets (well, with M16 rather than specifically American – I just painted some green to use as M16 equipped Argentine special forces).

Our current motor rifle figures are in summer dress but I have done a nice little ushanka head and hope to drop it onto some suitably attired bodies soon.
