Writing in White Dwarf magazine #376, sculptor Jes Goodwin reminisces: Eldrad [Ulthran] was also a first in that it was detailed with lots of raised areas, depressions and inlaid designs. Eldar models before Eldrad had been very smooth
Do you prefer the modern, more detailed Eldar style, or the older, smooth style of sculpting? |

To be the contrarian, newer. I've collected Eldar since 3rd, and the aesthetic has only gotten better IMHO. During 1st/2nd the aesthetic wasn't as well developed and frankly the old helmet styles were terrible IMHO. This is why I didn't collect in 2nd. Damon. |

I'm in between. I liked the original Aspect Warriors, but like the newer Guardians. Though putting them together is a giant pain in the

The Eldar player in my gaming group are all about the older sculpts. I'm happy to shoot at either. |

Newer is better for the most part, like the plastic Wraithlord, Warwalkers, Aspect Warriors, and Harlequins. Some of the latest Aspect Warriors are new sculpts of original designs, like the Fire Dragons, Dark Reapers, Howling Banshees and Striking Scorpions. Some older models that haven't been updated, like the Avatar and the Phoenix Lords are fine, but some may consider anything beyond 2nd edition as 'new.' Some are in need of an update, like the Wraithguard and IMHO the plastic chopper-style jetbike with guardians wearing speed vests. |

I brought my 1st Eldar models way back in 1988. Not all Eldar back then were smooth. |

Both. still think those Harlequinns are some of the best Sci-Fi figures done. |

Generally I like the newer style of Eldar more, although there are a few stinkers in there. I hate the newest Dark Reaper helmets, they look like ballons with some skull like features drawn on with a marker. The previous versions were the best in my opinion, not the old skinny 2nd edition ones either. |

I still have two of the original Eldar models. The Eldar adventurer isn't wearing armor and has a rather punk hairdo (as did most of the original Eldar miniatures) and the Eldar trooper's armor is covered with rivets. The rivets never did much for me but the majority of the Rogue Trader era Eldar, the ones with the mohawks, are still among my favorite GW minis. Of course, I also liked the original space marine miniatures with the puffed and slashed elbow and knee armor, so I guess I'm just weird. LT |

"I also liked the original space marine miniatures with the puffed and slashed elbow and knee armor" Those were the Scouts, I think. |

To my thinking they should look elegant, streamlined, graceful
having loads of 'bling' all over them works against that image. |

I love both older and newer Guardians and Scouts, but the Viper Jet bike set the standard for the Cool Eldar ascetic. I think the newer platform weapons, WarWalkers and Wraithlord are vastly nicer then the older ones. The Aspect warriors were always ify in my eye and I think the huge headed Phoenix Lords are lousy. |

Older. More and more detail and gibbits is not always a good thing. |
