The USS New York battleship 1942 was armed 10x 14" guns, 16x 5" guns, and 8x 3" guns. Looking at drawings and photographs on the internet, I can't account for the location of all 16 5-inch guns. Also, I can't tell where the 3-inch guns are mounted. Can someone explain/illustrate the layout of the 5-inch and 3-inch guns on the New York? Thanks. |

I believe the New York and Texas had all but 6 5" guns removed by 1942. These were mounted on the upper deck in a structure with some of the 3" AA guns mounted on the roof. On the Texas the rest of the 3" were aft by the rear tripod. There were some 1.1" mounts, later replaced by 40mm, and many 20mm were added as on all other pre-war ships |

In 1942, were the remaining 5" guns in single mounts. How many 3" guns were on the New York in 1942? I have one source that says 8 and another source that says 10. |

Breyer, "Battleships and Battle Cruisers 1905 1970," says that the 8 3" were added atop the new casemate in the 1920s when the 6 6" guns were moved up a deck. These are the 6 6" guns that remained after the 1942 refit. Two more 3" guns were added outboard of the mainmast in that 1942 refit. |

Do they really say 6" guns? I thought they were 5". |

These were 5" 51 caliber weapons. They were large and powerful. They and the 3" AA were all in single mounts. |
