I, for one, love this look for ceremonial wear:

picture

Aside from the obvious beauty and revealing clothing, I like the exotic nature of the jewelry and other accessories, which makes it hard to pinpoint a specific culture, place or time. The body paint hints at Arabic-Indian influence, but is still in a style all its own. She looks unattainable, but still like a person (just a notch above the dress her maidens are wearing).

Contrast with Padme Amidala's ceremonial dress here:

picture

She may meet her alien subjects' conventional ideals of beauty, which is fine, but to me her appearance was too rigid and her demeanor too distant in my opinion. Can't put my finger on why I feel that way. Perhaps because they always made her look like a statue and not a person?

Reminds me a lot of Cate Blanchett's ceremonial look she adopts towards the latter part of the film "Elizabeth" (1998):

picture

Too much like a statue for my taste. The outfit looks too elaborate, even by her contemporary standards.

So, how do you like your princesses to look?

And how do you think that could be translated into a miniature figure?

What pose meets those standards best, without making her look like well dressed concubine or slave?

Thanks,

Dan

I like the exotic look for my space princesses. Headresses, body adornments, perhaps, but not necessarily, some skin showing.

I have, for example, been hoping somebody would do a Leopard Queen and princess for 28mm Pulp genre figs for a while, though they have not materialized. I imagine these dones in a fine Frazetta fashion with gold-trimmed bikinis to be painted in leopard print, feathered and gold head adornment, perhaps a leopard skin cape.

Drawn by Frazetta.

Or with cinnamon bun hair.

Ghostrunner18 Apr 2012 6:49 a.m. PST

Definitely Dejah has the best look of those presented.

In miniature form, the other two would look like a couple of circus clowns at that scale (no offense to the actresses represented).

There's also the fact that wearing either of the 2nd or 3rd options would result in a character that realistically wouldn't be running across a skirmish zone (or anywhere else for that matter).

Dejah at least looks like she could move in that outfit.

Didn't even have to think about it.

I'll have to disagree with you on the heavily costumed princesses looking like circus clowns in small scale. 15mm doesn't mean lacking detail and definition anymore, so I think they would look fine as what they are intended to be.

As for their tactical ability, you are right, but I'd say there is room for many sorts of princesses. In fact, that might make for a cool pack of minis. something like "Alien Princesses" with a half dozen different versions of scifi princesses would be neat.

I'm going to vote for the metal bikini type.

Mithmee18 Apr 2012 7:23 a.m. PST

Can I get a set of those.

I would like one to be Nubian Black and the other to be Asian Yellow with both being just around 5'10" tall.

Oh and I would like for both to have the quick release option for their outfits.

Angel Barracks,

Very nice, but they could use a splash of Devlan Bud.

C'mon guys, in LOTR, Miranda Otto as Eowyn manged to look regal and sensuous without resorting to fleshpot stuff. See here:

Yeah, Eowyn was cool.

To be fair, Amidala's makeup thing was both cultural and a part of her body double security scheme. She was intended to be distant and unattainable during her term as Queen.

Senator Amidala, on the other hand…

Eli Arndt18 Apr 2012 11:01 a.m. PST

I think it was sort of cool that they had Amidala's office be so heavily ritualized.

Well I read all the way to the bottom here but after the picture of the two princesses I stopped processing any of the further information. I think that makes them the winner.

RE Amidala: "but to me (…) her demeanor too distant in my opinion. Can't put my finger on why I feel that way."

To me, it was less the movie character and more her acting ability at the time. ;-)

Lion in the Stars18 Apr 2012 5:36 p.m. PST

Funny, I always put that the other way. "The Queen" was supposed to be aloof and distant. Padme was not.

=====================
As far as how I want my princesses to look, it depends on the image you're trying to present.

If you're aiming for a "tomboy princess," then you should make her look more like one of the guys. Like Princess Victoria Louise, Eowyn, or that elf chick Terrement posted.

A "Royal Pain" is generally the sheltered type, utterly impractical clothes/jewelry and clueless about the outside world. But she's the Princess and don't you forget it!

The "Damsel in Distress" is usually in *very* revealing clothes (if she's clothed at all!), but not of her choice.

I consider the tomboy princess the most fun.

Like Dejah Thoris as described by Edgar Rice Burroughs in "A Princess of Mars"

And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure, similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life. She did not see me at first, but just as she was disappearing through the portal of the building which was to be her prison she turned, and her eyes met mine. Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Her skin was of a light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a strangely enhancing effect.

She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure.

Ah, for the women of Barsoom and the Hyborian Age whose only garment is their beauty!

jpattern218 Apr 2012 6:17 p.m. PST

I was always partial to the princess in Don Maitz's cover painting for "Perilous Seas" by Dave Duncan:

Princess Elizabeth for the win.

abdul666lw19 Apr 2012 4:16 a.m. PST

Depends: what type of princess?
The 'passive' heroine who screams and has to be rescued

picture

or the 'active' female hero?

picture

The 'Royal Brat / Royal Pain' can evolve in either direction when the fun begins (as could the two presented by Angel Barracks, who would look equally good as victims as if bristling with swords and daggers).

Interesting that Leia is almost ignored: because she looked 'passive' while 'acting'? Or because the 1st SW trilogy was so 'asexual' that she is not remembered as female?
Equally interesting is the quasi-absence of Xena; OK, she looked *so* mannish -Callisto was more feminine

picture

But maybe most males have yet to accept the 'fighting woman' type, how popular it became recently in fantasy / SF TV and movies: Guinevere in 'King Arthur' (there is also a lovely Pict princess in recent 'Centurion'), Kahlan & Cara in 'Legend of the Seeker', Morgause in 'Merlin', even Snow White and Dejah Thoris to name a few.

A few suggestions, to answer the OP:
THE warrior princess:

Not my type, but Modesty Blaise was nicknamed 'princess', at least in the movie.

Regal, well composed, and outfitted in period/setting garb rather than ridiculously inane "fan service" garb designed for the lesser people. Seriously people who use the "princess dresses/looks like a Bleeped text" trope in even a vaguely serious context are idiots or bad writers. A good military at her back never hurts either.

Goddess Maiden Cloche Leythal Pastalia

So I asked the Princess; Do you know what would look good on you?

She looked at me winsomely and said; No what?

To which I responded; Me!

And we all lived happily ever after.

"Frazettic"?

For Frazetta 'Hips don't lie', thus his women are a little plump below the waist and a little skinny above. 100% personal of course, but for me such silhouette is more fitting for cultivatrices (peasant women) than for princesses evil grin

Now, for a 'serious' Victorian-compatible suggestion:

For an 'authentic' (drawn in the late 20th C.) VSF princess:

picture

Replace the umbrella with a sword to have her looking princely.
For an 'adventurous princess' suppose she has some kind of steampunk Uzi in a holster on her right hip.

Let's cut the anime crap, and I won't post any Frazetta pics, deal?…
