Does anyone know a breakdown of the types of German tanks that fought at the Battle of Stalingrad? |
Frederick | 17 Apr 2012 6:59 p.m. PST |
I think they were mostly Panzer IIIs and IVs with a sprinkling of StuGs These pictures might be of interest link |

From link 3. Infanterie-Division (mot.): 7 Panzer II 20 Panzer III long-barrel 1 Panzer IV long-barrel 1 Panzer IV short-barrel 29. Infanterie-Division (mot.): 2 Panzer II 5 Panzer III long-barrel 2 Panzer IV long-barrel 60. Infanterie-Division (mot.): 6 Panzer II 20 Panzer III long-barrel 8 Panzer IV long-barrel 3 Panzer IV short-barrel 14. Panzer-Division: 3 Panzer II 12 Panzer III long-barrel 2 Panzer III short-barrel 3 Panzer IV long-barrel 1 Panzer IV short-barrel 4 Panzerbefehlswagen (command panzers) 16. Panzer-Division: 47 Panzer III long-barrel 8 Panzer III short-barrel 7 Panzer IV long-barrel 2 Panzer IV short-barrel 24. Panzer-Division: 7 Panzer II 6 Panzer III long-barrel 5 Panzer III short-barrel 3 Panzer IV long-barrel 1 Panzer IV short-barrel 1 Panzerbefehlswagen Therefore, if you add them all up, the totals are as follows: Tank strength of on 13 September 1942*: 25 Panzer II 110 Panzer III long-barrel 15 Panzer III short-barrel 24 Panzer IV long-barrel 8 Panzer IV short-barrel 5 Panzerbefehlswagen Total panzers = 187 22nd Panzer fought in the area with Panzer 38(t)s. I think 26 Panzer was there with Panzer 38s as well but I could be very wrong.

As for StuG battalions: 177 Abt 244 Abt 245 Abt I think most of them were StuG Fs |

There were also 12 of the Pzkfz III based SiG 33 sent to Stalingrad, which are just as much tanks as the StuGs are! |

"22nd Panzer fought in the area with Panzer 38(t)s. I think 26 Panzer was there with Panzer 38s as well but I could be very wrong." 22nd Panzer was paired with 1st Rumanian Armoured Div (R2s – the Rumanian version of the Pz 35t) to form 47th Panzer Corps. Neither fought inside the pocket, similarly 29th Mot ID was mainly stationed at Elista well south of Stalingrad to provide a flank link with Army Group A. IIRC the divisional frontage was 300 miles! |

Did any long-gun Stugs (Stug-G) get to Stalingrad? |
donlowry | 18 Apr 2012 4:32 p.m. PST |
Various versions of Marder II and III, presumably. |
Etranger | 18 Apr 2012 7:18 p.m. PST |
Timbo, I think some F8s made it, precursor to the ausf G. |

Frederick: What great pix you have in that link. Many there I have never seen. Especialy the abandoned Marders. |

I think they were mostly Panzer IIIs and IVs with a sprinkling of StuGsThese pictures might be of interest The long barrel StuG is a StuG III/F. The F/8 probably never made it to Stalingrad. |

Well maybe this is a chance for me to get my knowledge base adjusted, but … I was not aware of Wehrmacht Infantry Divisions (Mot) ever having tanks on strength. Was this unique to Stalingrad? As far as I have ever understood it, German tanks (Panzers) were always and only present in the Panzer Divisions, Panzer Brigades, Panzer Grenadier Divisions, and independent Panzer Abtlg's (ie: Tiger tank battalions). Or are we describing Panzer Grenadier Divisions by incorrect names? Or are we describing tanks from Panzer Divisions that were tasked-off to the Infantry Divisions? Or do I have it all wrong? Enquiring minds want to know … -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

Or do I have it all wrong? Indeed you do. Or slightly anyway. At first I was doubtfull too, but just a couple of minutes with my books and a single Google search later it appears that those formations did indeed have tanks, and quite a few. The motorised infantry divisions of Army Group B had tank battalions attached to them. Two of these came from Pz. Rgt. 18 and went to the 3rd (Pz. Abt. 103) and 60th (Pz. Abt. 160) I.D.(mot). link For a bit more information on Pz. Rgt. 18 In 'Panzer Truppen vol.1' Jentz writes that in preparation for the 1942 offensives by Army Group South each Pz. Div. was to be reinforced with a third organic Pz. Abt., and each Inf. Div.(mot) was to be reinforced with an organic Pz. Abt. 1st and 17th Pz. Divs. each 'lost' a Pz. Abt. to the other two I.D.(mot)s. So this appears to be a formal change in the structure of these four I.D.(mot)s for this campaign, and not just a temporary attachment for a single mission. |
