I don't know about you, but I have a lot of settings, themes, historical periods, etc. that I think would be great to game, but I just don't do them.

For example, I've always wanted to do ancients, but I stall out when I look at THREE THOUSAND YEARS of history from which to choose (give or take a millennium). "Alexander vs. Persians? Carthaginians vs. Republican Romans? Early Imperial Romans vs. Everyone?"

Why haven't you started collecting/painting that period you've been thinking about for years?

Cost: just too much money to start over
Time: not enough time to start a new project
Depth of setting: just too broad to narrow down
Lack of minis: not enough six-legged amphibian warriors
Lack of interest: I'm not interested in anything new
Other: please specify, blahblah

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian17 Apr 2012 4:21 p.m. PST

Lack of opponents interested in period. I've done more than enough of the "paint both sides" thing to be tired of it. No more periods/genres/etc where I have to provide everything to play.

No more periods/genres/etc where I have to provide everything to play.

I'm so accustomed/habituated to having to paint both/all sides that that didn't even occur to me. That's sad.

English Civil War – no time ..

BW195917 Apr 2012 4:35 p.m. PST

Not found a set of rules that worked for the period. Bought the minis but no time to paint.

Scott MacPhee17 Apr 2012 4:43 p.m. PST

I have always wanted to play Arthurian Britain. I would say some combination of cost and lack of time has kept me from tackling it.

GoGators17 Apr 2012 4:49 p.m. PST

Cash money. Not enough of it have I. =\

I wonder if I can get a government grant to buy more figures….

Is being lazy the same thing as lacking time?

(I am Spam)17 Apr 2012 5:59 p.m. PST

Never have enough time! Now that I am making money I am too tired to paint and there's a serious storage problem too.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP17 Apr 2012 6:01 p.m. PST

No miniatures I like in the scale I want to do the period in.

I'm old and won't have time to start new periods let alone finish those I have started already.

21eRegt17 Apr 2012 6:18 p.m. PST

Lack of a fashionable set of rules that others would play and I would enjoy.

John the OFM17 Apr 2012 6:33 p.m. PST

I HAVE started most periods that interest me. Sadly, in many, if not most, I have not endeavored to persevere. For the usual reasons. Poverty, laziness, lack of moral fiber…

One period I am interested in, WW2 Naval, I have not even attempted. I think I would suck at painting ships, and I know myself. If I ever produced half decent looking models, I would have every navy, all the ships, fron Aden to Zanzibar.
Ditto Napoleonic naval.

cfielitz17 Apr 2012 6:54 p.m. PST

For many years, I've wanted to start either the American Revolution or American Civil War, either in 15mm or 10mm. Right now I barely have the time to work on my current projects, let alone start new ones. Plus, opponents are almost non-existent. Every so often, however, I peruse the sites of various manufacturers who make miniatures in these areas just for fun. It is my version of window shopping.

Pictors Studio17 Apr 2012 6:56 p.m. PST

It would be neat to do Napoleonic land gaming. I game naval now. But I think with all the other periods I game I just would never have enough time to do enough stuff to put what I would like to see as a game togehter. Nevermind that I would never be able to settle on a theater or time.

Primarily due to lack of painting time and funds (for large projects), plus I don't get to game with most of what I have now.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP17 Apr 2012 7:02 p.m. PST

Lack of time – I can barely paint the stuff I have now, let alone staring a new period

Jakar Nilson17 Apr 2012 7:48 p.m. PST

Lack of storage space – always a big one…

Glengarry 417 Apr 2012 8:59 p.m. PST

Eastern Renaissance… Polish winged hussars, Muskovites, cossacks… but the time and cost of painting all that cavalry!

advocate18 Apr 2012 2:47 a.m. PST

Money
Time
An odd one: I start off thinking of a period that would be good to game. I then read a couple of books and think: "How can I possible represent the essentials of that period and still make it a playable, enjoyable game?"

Sane Max18 Apr 2012 3:19 a.m. PST

14th and 15th century Europe – simply can't spare the time yet. The only gap in my collection from Sumer to AK47.

Still caught up in ancients and finishing existing projects ( finish painting 28mm scifi horde and painting last of barbarian stash) but have planned next project, clontarf in 15mm.

Lack of time. That said, I had always had an interest in the Spanish American war and it peaked when Old Glory did their range. I still held out until someone started and dropped the project and 40 to 60 of their figures were put in the consignment bin. Seven years and 800 figures later I'm about to complete my SAW project.

I already do the periods I'm interested in.

These are (from present times back)

Early WWII and Between the wars.
American Civil War.
The Long 18th Century (from 1660 to 1789)
The Thirty Years War
The Wars of the Renaissance in Italy (1400 to 1540)

WWI and WWII naval.

Semi-historically I am interested in the Medieval World, but its sort of a semi-Fantasy- Imagination.

The Very ancient world, again in imagi-nation, studying the Mythopeic period and autochthonous (first) societies.

Beyond those I really can't muster the interest.

Rules are completely irrelevant, I write my own, and those that I don't write are pretty worthless. They don't model what I want to model, and for the most part, they're wrong, and purely derivative.

The period has to have historical interest. This "interest" for me is primarily the cultural, intellectual, artistic, and philosophical aspects of the society and the period, as well as the specifically military aspect. The human dimension must be there, strong, vibrant personalities, great dramatic potential, and big competing issues.

Altius18 Apr 2012 7:03 a.m. PST

Three reasons:

1) The cost of getting into a new period, both in terms of money and in time spent researching the period to 'get it right'.
2) The lack of figures for a particular period.
3) Nobody else in my area plays it. This one doesn't always stop me, but I am tired of having a bunch of pretty armies on my shelf that no one else wants to play.

*time: spending too much time answering questions on tmp? grin

WQRobb18 Apr 2012 7:36 a.m. PST

1. Lack of an opponent. Trying to get someone to take up whatever obscure genre/historical period feels like trying to get someone to put their foot in a trap some time.

2. Hobby ADD. I'll get enthusiastic, buy a handful of miniatures, and then totally peter out when the first issue begins to raise its ugly head.

TodCreasey18 Apr 2012 10:18 a.m. PST

I am in a good healthy club so I let what they guys are into there dictate me somewhat. For instance I wanted to start a 28mm ancients/medieval project this year and the current SAGAG craze got me going in Dark Ages.

However I would still love:
French Revolution in 28s. This will happen when Napoleonics in 28s is under control (still want Austrians and Prussians)

Biblicals in 28s. Egypt, Assyria, Hittites any of those would suit me. Money and the enthusiasm of the other guys for it holding me back but there may be someone coming back who gets me going again

AWI in 28s. Just not sure I would ever get a game in and there is enough going on in Napoleonics to keep me busy

corporalpat18 Apr 2012 1:41 p.m. PST

Time and, more importantly, money!

The Gonk18 Apr 2012 1:44 p.m. PST

Because, after fifteen years, I finally learned.

Grand Duke Natokina18 Apr 2012 2:40 p.m. PST

I would do ancients--I like the Hittites--but all my friends are WWII types.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER18 Apr 2012 5:05 p.m. PST

I've got all the Periods I want, The only other army I want is Jacobite in 15mm, but just don't see it happening.

David Miniature Armies18 Apr 2012 6:21 p.m. PST

Lack of time. Never seems to be enough.

Thanks for the interesting responses.

Let me also say I'm impressed that no one read the subject line and answered "because I'm pregnant."
