The battle of Flodden was fought in 1513 and included a large Highland contingent.

The front rank of the Highlanders were mailed archers with two handed swords pretty much the same type that turn up as Redshanks or New Scots towards the end of the century in Ireland. Easy enough to model and I have done so.

But what about the rear rank? wargamers traditionaly model these as lads in their saffron shirts with a variety of pole arms and other weapons. My dilemma is this, there is evidence that Highlanders were still wearing the same costume as the Irish in this period. So should my Highland rear rankers look like Irish or like later 'humblies' who have thrown off their plaids?

As I have sufficent figures for both I can base up both options but I am interested in what others think.

Why not a mixture of both? That means that when you weary of painting plaid you can do solid colors for a while….

Sadly or maybe luckily! none of the figures I have are wearing their plaids so I'm spared the joy of painting tartan in 15mm.

Forgive my ignorance on this but did they have tartans then? I thought they were an 18th/19th century thing started as a fashion by lowlanders?

cheers

Yes they did and some were quite striking. There is a reference later in the century to one of the Irish lords recieving some as part of a dowry – everyone was impressed by the pattern and colours.

You are right though what we call tartan today complete with ascription to a clan is a 19th Century invention/fashion.

Thanks for that, I didn't realise. I thought they would be plainish….I'll go have a google,

Cheers

It's the idea of specific clan tartans that was invented in the 19th Century.

you can use simple tartans, the earliest recorded is 3rd century AD.

Well that's tartan sorted.

Any thoughts on what the rear ranks were wearing in Highland formations at Flodden?
