That got your attention, didn't it?

So, the story is that about 3 years ago I ordered from New Wave in my vast ignorance. Shortly thereafter I discovered TMP. Worrying ensued as I read about how awful New Wave is. Surprisingly, I received my order -- but there was no way I was going to tempt the mail order gods by ordering again.

I moved recently, and in unpacking I discovered a little slip of paper from New Wave which said "Sorry, we can no longer get this miniature (one of the brief-lived WOTC Star Wars, I think) -- you have a credit of $3.99 USD and we will pay the shipping if you want to order something else"

Now, at the time I just wrote this off (and ignored the fact that they could and should have just credited my credit card account)-- but now I'm thinking -- why not? It should be good for a laugh.

So, what should I buy from New Wave for $3.99 USD or less?

You'll get a lot of negative responses, but if you take an extra step, you can prevent the negativitiy...

I was suckered into the seriously low prices and nifty website set up, but like so many others, had difficulties when things were out of stock. New Wave lists everything they can ORDER, not everything they have in stock.

So long as you understand that aspect. Thier low prices are because they have little actually on the shelf, much of their offerings rely on "just in time" orders (that is, they order it when you do), so if the mfgr or distribution is fast, you get it quick too, if there are difficulties or delays/backorders down the line, they get passed to you as the customer that ordered.

BUT - I have had 100% success and satisfaction from them by emailing an inquiry to see if the items I am looking for are in stock first before ordering. So long as I've taken that step to make sure they HAVE the item - - I've had nothing but joy from those orders, same low price and quick shipping, no more delays or problems.

Is it good business? Well, not really. My overall take is that you should not show it if you don't have it; there should be some kind of number showing how many "in stock" so that the customer is forewarned that the item would have to be backordered.

All in all, I am willing to take the extra step and inquire first before purchasing.

Don't buy ANYTHING from New Wave it's a RIPOFF SITE. If you want to waste money open your front door and empty your wallet into the street.

NEW WAVE SUCKS MUCH Bleeped text.

BillChuck's telepathetic powers predict they'll ask for your credit card in the process of ordering, and not bother to tell you that your store credit has expired and they billed the order (and shipping) to your card.

And... it won't show up anyway.

Mardaddy,
I have like sentiments. I've ordered from Newwave for years and have no problems...that I did NOT anticipate. Yeah, I've had to wait 2 months for an item before, but I knew that going into it, and since I didn't have to pay shipping, I was willing to put up with it. For all the negative responses, its apparent that Newwave must deal with some customers that are satisfied as they wouldn't still be in business if they didn't. Like you, I take the right precautions now, ie phoning ahead to see if they have something in stock, etc, and still have little to no problem with my orders.

Hmmm, was I not clear? BillChuck makes a good point but nobody else read the post, it seems. BillChuck -- I will be sure not to give them a credit card number at all.

I know New Wave's reputation. I'm only going to use the credit that they already have given me (supposedly). They will get no further money from me -- if they had been honest in the first place and credited my card then they wouldn't be in this mess.

But I want a souvenier from my one correspondence with them. A memento of having risked it all and come out OK. AND -- what is their cost going to be to ship this fig? $2-$3? That comes out of their pocket. Serves 'em right.

I found a few Excalibur figs that I wouldn't mind having that are under the price point.

So -- what should I buy from New Wave for $3.99 or less?

hard core fairy!!!

Jana Wang29 Jul 2004 1:14 p.m. PST

Stingray, have a look at the Excalibur line. There's a variety of sci-fi, fantasy, and erotic figures there, and more than a few are $3.99 or $3.49 -- using the most of your credit possible. This line isn't available in the US, so you'd be getting something you couldn't normally buy at a local shop (assuming you got it in the end).

Second choice would be the Shadowforge line, in the $2.99 price range, also from overseas and not sold in the US.

What about "EX9107 Cyberbear (3) and cyberscorpion (3)"? That's 6 minis for free- if they ever show up...

IF it was my choice I'd go with "EX9252 Mr. Long" (the Joker-like guy) because I've wanted it for a loooong time but haven't wanted to risk another New Wave experience to get him.

This came up on the Privateer Press forums - apparently, New Wave has over 180 registered complaints with the BBB.

And seeing how you almost have to WORK to get a complaint with the BBB...

stingray20166, for $3.99 you should be able to afford their reputation several hundred times over.

Krakrakra30 Jul 2004 12:00 a.m. PST

don't buy from new wave. they charge your credit card right away, then only send half your order & no matter how many mails you send them afterwards, they just ignore you. at least that's my experience as a international buyer.

Sororitas30 Jul 2004 5:11 a.m. PST

No No, don't send your mondy to New Wave, send it to me instead, I will sell you twice as much for the same price, however 2x0 is still 0.

Excellent -- the cyberScorpion! What better image to invoke New Wave!

Thanks, CBPIII! You win the non-prize!

I'll report back on this little experiment. . .

CBPIII30 Jul 2004 10:23 a.m. PST

That's what I'm here for... You're not sending the non-prize via New Wave-- I hope!
