Next Sunday I will be running a Wars of the Roses game based on a potential clash between Edward IV and the Earl of Oxford, as Edward was marching south to confront Warwick in the spring of 1471.

Edward's army was still relatively small, consisting of little more than his own retinue, that of his brother Richard Duke of Gloucester and some Flemish mercenaries. By 25th March he reached Nottingham where he was joined by Sir William Stanley's contingent and a large number of other reinforcements raised in the Midlands by Lord Hastings.

Meanwhile John de Vere, Earl of Oxford set out from Bury St Edmunds to intercept Edward. He planed a rendezvous at King's Lynn with Henry Holland Duke of Exeter and William Viscount Beaumont on 22 March. Then they swung west towards Newark, to catch Edward. In addition to their own retinues the Lancastrian force included around 4,000 men from East Anglia and the Fens

Edward heard of Oxford and Exeter's arrival at Newark and decided to march out to meet them. After a brief skirmish between the outriders of the two armies the Lancastrians withdrew.

For the battle next weekend I am assuming a full scale battle actually took place. There will be photos and a full battle report on my blog. In the meantime here is a taster:

Looks good. I shall wait for your AAR. Thanks.

I like the Tewkesbury battle, as well

good idea for a 'what if'. I might use that.

We'll see how it goes. Maybe Edward never makes it to Barnet. It is also quite a good scenario if you do not yet have very many figures as the forces are still quite small

What rules will you be using? I had an excellent HC WotR Game last week, and now four people are buying WotR armies!

I am play testing a development of my Comitatus rules for the 14th/15th C. So far they are working very well and if there are no huge bugs revealed on the weekend I will post a Beta version in the rules section of the website in a week or two. link
The rules are called The Tree of Battles, after the mid 14th C military treatise by Honoré Bonet
